anyone ever put a speed triple engine into a legend or thunderbird or ever hear of someone doing so? i'm pretty sure it will work but i don't know if it will mount to the frame the same way.

Yep, it's been done. Should mount right up, but you might have to make a few minor mods.... I am assuming you are talking about the 885 engine? A T-5 might be a bit more challenging.

It would be nice to mount a 955 into a t300 frame, whether it be a TBird, S3...., but I think the engine is shorter and the mounts somewhat different in position consequentially. I have seen a Fi to Carb conversion for the 955 engine in a race bike back in the late 90's, which might be a better choice than trying to ram the airbox etc... into zero space, 'cos of the centre spline frame. At the time it produced more power than the Fi, go figure! But engine size, mount position would be only a hiccup to the determined - recently 955 engines on ebay have been going for $500 or so. :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: :-D

Would a Tiger engine be a better choice since it doesn't use a perimeter frame?

Well you saved yourself some money in all likelihood, the dimensions and mounting point locations are different (as already said) but also the inlets are angled upwards at 45 degrees so the carbs wouldnt fit, and also the exhaust headers are a totally different shape at the cylinder head joint.
If you want speed triple spec, the best thing to do is to rengineer the engine cases to take the 955 pistons and liners, then upgrade your head to speed triple/daytona spec.
Lots of work but it can (and has) been done.

PS. your Legend's frame was not designed to handle 115hp. Get on the gas hard and it will start flexing.

Actually the frame should be good. what is essentailly the same frame handles 147hp in the Daytona 1200. However, the brakes, wheels and suspension are not designed for all that extra power and would likely give problems (or worse be dangerous).
