I have been looking for a local triumph for quite some time. I found a 96 Thunderbird w/ 10,000 miles, a and a corbin seat. Has been garaged and is in great shape. Asking price is $4000. Is this a fair deal? Seems like I could probably find something less expensive online, but would have to pay for shipping which could be $500+. It also comes with 3 helmets and saddlebags. What would you do? Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard Cruzah, are you thinking of buying this bike privately, or from a dealer?

I usually find that private sellers are asking retail money for their bikes, and you might only save 3or400 dollars over what you would pay from a dealer with none of the associated benefits.

When i bought my bike i scoured the ads for the specific model i wanted, i found the difference between what the dealers wanted and what private individuals wanted, to be quite quite small.

I duly bought my bike on-line from a dealer 200miles away, i negotiated a summer screen to be included in the selling price, the bike was fully seviced and fitted with a new front tyre. and, even though my bike was almost 6 years old.i got a 12month Triumph warranty.

I had a warranty issue with the bike staight away,( the old alternator bolt problem) this was sorted without fuss at a cost of around $300.

The point to all this is, if you buy a bike privately your on your own, through a dealer you have some redress.
You need. IMHO to save a lot of money in a private sale to outway the benefits of buying from a dealer.

Something to remember when it comes to negotiation time!

I too am looking at used bikes (Tigers). This is fantastic advice. I will use it myself.

Quick update. I bought the bike, it is in pristine condition for being a 96. Rides great, handles great. Now I just need some warm weather to ride in.
