New Clutch time

My old Tbird is getting a bit sad in the clutch department. It has been constantly abused for over 143,000klms. I ordered one off a mate of mine who sells clutch and brake parts in sydney. 9 friction plates, a set of springs, and a gasket, total cost 160 aud including postage. If it's raining still tomorrow I shall have at it waith spanners and stuff and fit the new one.

British Engineering has Come of Age

Thats a great mileage for a clutch. Today I whipped the cylinder head off to track down the elusive source causing excessive blowby (out of the breather). The blowby is not absolutely ridiculous, more annoying, what with having to modify the entire breathing system to prevent the engine air clearner getting contaminated.

The head gasket certainly does not look the best and am taking it around to a Cobber who runs his own engine recon shop and he will be able to point out any defects. Looking down into the liners the gap between the pistons and walls looks excessive, haven't done any measurements yet.

As the liners have to come out to be re-sealed the condition of the rings will be interesting!

Camshaft chain tensioner in good nick as is the rubbing block that goes down the front of the chain tunnel. Taking the chain into a specialist to check for wear.

Crap in the water jacket! Accumulated around #3 liner between the liner and the camshaft chain tunnel casting. Has to be thoroughly cleaned out prior to liner removal.

Altogether an interesting exercise, will probably go with new rings and a valve grind.

I had the cam chain replaced about 5,000klms ago, the bloke who did it reckons it would have gone for a while longer, but due to the nature of my work I said replace it now. I never know when I will get back to Brisbane to the only bikeshop I trust.

Put the clutch in this arvo, only took me about an hour. Straightforward job. They are nice simple bikes these. Should be good for another 140 odd thousand now. Forks next.
