02 Triumph- Oil sight window wrong??
So in the past when I've changed the oil I just put oil into the bike until it's filling up 1/2 (but closer to the top) of the oil window while the bike is level. I never measured it. While browsing around this site I noticed a link for how to change the oil on a t-bird (from webbikeworkd). It stated that the site window is wrong!!
Is that accurate? have I been underfilling the oil this whole time? This guy is saying to put a 2x4 under the kick stand and measure it that way? Manual says to put the bike level?
Tried doing a search but came up with Nothing.
Thanks!!

I've always filled it so the sight glass is half full with the bike level, takes 3.5 litres. Never had a problem.

each to their own - manual is right WBW is less right - the glass works fine.
As an aside I always fill mine to just under the top of the glass... remember to re check after running if you are changing the filter

Oil Sight Glass.......
.... is next to useless!. A very small degree of lean off centre will provide a false reading in the sight glass. In my case, I measure out/measure in the oil when changing oil and filter. I am with Woodsie on this one 3.5 litres it is for my scoot. Used to run 4 litres with the oil level out of sight on the glass (and bike as near as practical to level). Found that with this amount in the sump the breather could not handle it. Experimentation showed that my machine 'likes 3.5 litres.

I asked this question of Ma's cycle and they stated that an oil change and filter it takes 3.5 litres, 4 if the engine gets tore down for a rebuild.

Both are correct. The 2X4 levels the bike from side to side which is the angle of reference in the manual. A 2X4 is kind of scary to me so I put the bike on a jack after an oil change and top it off to the center of the site glass and give the bike a good once-over while it is in the air.

Perhaps I should clarify my "less right" statement - I essentially meant the above. i.e. that the sight glass is not wrong, but yes you should be filling it on the level, not with 2x4's or similar (i.e. less right) . With the bike level in both directions you'll find the glass works.

Here is what works for me.
I have an 03 Tbird with a center stand. With the bike on the center stand I lift the front wheel up 1 inch. I found that a hockey puck is exactly 1 inch in width so I use that under the front wheel. The bike is now level and the sight glass works as it should. I fill to half way up the glass. With this method I no longer get oil dripping out of the airbox.
