tuning question - open airbox & D&D 3 into 3

I've perused all the boards for best and proven set-ups, but thought I'd cast a line for anyone who's got the same set up. 99 TBS.

I have an 8 hole drilled airbox and did have drilled out stock mufflers. Am running 125 mains, one shim under needle, 40 pilots and air screws out 2.5 turns. It ran OK - maybe not perfect - but better than stock. I just fitted D&D 3 into 3 and I'm a little bit off again - bit boggy on the mid range, blue pipes, loadsa loud popping on the decel at around 3k.

Before I start meesing around and maybe investing in some dyno work...amyone been down this path already? got the same set up? What are you running on the carbs?

Thanks, Geoff

Well I'm close to your set-up. '99 Legend with 3 into 2 D&D slip-ons. I used a jet kit so my needles are adjustable and have a different taper but my main jets are 135s and the pilots are a 42 on the #1 carb and 40s on #2 & #3. I adjust the air screws with the carbs installed with a modified adjusting tool so I'm not sure how many turns out they are. I've always had to go out more turns on the #1 carb so I went up on the jet size to compesate and they are all about the same number of turns now, probably 3. Just adjust them out untill the popping on deceleration is minimal but don't expect it to go away completely. It will be a muffled "plop-plop-plop" but no "kapow-pow-pow". I also set the float height according to the instructions with the jet kit (14mm?) and syncronized the carbs. I think the needle height ended up in the #2 or #3 position. The airbox has 2 large holes in the bottom and the secondary airbox bypassed. All holes are screened to prevent pests from entering. I spent months tweeking it and there is not a single glitch anywhere in the power band. You will be very happy with the set-up once you get it right.

Thanks for the info. That's a pretty rich set up you've got so maybe I've been staying too lean. I have some questions, if you don't mind:

1) How did you select the mains? have you done any dyno runs, or just trial and error? What other sizes have you tried?

2) interesting that you have #1 set richer. Is that the left cyl? I find my left runs hotter, so maybe it's lean Is this common, do you know?

3) Are you 3-into-2 headers stock or after market?

4) which needles are you using? dynojet? factorypro?

Cheers, Geoff

I used a FactoryPro jet kit. It included 3 sizes of jets from 130 to 140. I tried them all using full throttle to test. Each time I made a change with jets, needle height, airbox venting, I would ride with that set-up for a week or so before making another change. The last glitch I remember was a flat spot at about 4000 rpm that only happened on a certain stretch of road when I would get off the throttle and then back on hard. No dyno runs. Throttle response is seamless.
When I checked the stock position on the air screws the #1 cyl carb (left) was a full turn out farther than the other 2. This remained constant with every set-up so I tried a larger pilot on #1 and all 3 now require about the same adjustment. I don't know if that is common all stock motors but the exhaust and intake configuration will effect it so each modified bike may be different. My headers are stock. Recently had them ceramic coated satin black and they look fab.
