Any advice on cleaning out the tank?

How bad is the inside of the tank?
Since the petcock is the lowest point all the crud collects there.
Mine looked about like that, but I could not see any rust on the inside surface.
I rinsed it out several times with gasoline, cleaned the petcock thoroughly, installed a fairly large inline filter and all has been good for 6 years now.
But if you can see surface rust on the inside surface of the tank you'll need a more aggressive method. ssevy has written about sealing tanks with Caswell's product for that.

Though to see (obviously). Right under the cap has some big flakes missing from the coating (which prompted me to remove the petcock). What I do see looks like some of the coating is flaking of in pieces a couple mm across (1/8" for our American and ol' school friends). The bare metal has surface rust on it. Nothing major, but again, that just what I see.
I was reading ssevy's write up yesterday and was contemplating it. I think I'll do as you suggested and get an inline filter.
I'll remove the petcock again at end of season next year and see what it's collected. If it looks similar to this time I'll seal it up.
Thanks,
Clay

Put on a pair of the original square mirrors from 96-99 instead of the later round ones

Put her up for sale, so I can dedicate the time and money to my 6T.

Great Day
Spent most of a cold day in the garage with a couple of Silver Bullets and cleaning motorcycles. The old "Bumble Bee" appreciated the attention, still some of the best lines on a bike ever produced in my humble opinion........
