Other than the side covers and the tank, what else needs to be removed to replace the fuel lines? It seems that the connection between the carbs is nowhere in sight.

The lower connection is like a tee peice, and it swivels. If you pass the old fuel line down behind the carbs you should be able to pull it off, and push the new one one.

Be aware, there is a tiny filter pushed into the end of the tee.

LIke I said, I don't see any part of the lower end.
Is it necessary to yank the air cleaner box?

No, just use a flashlight and follow the old fuel line down between the carbs, it t's near the bottom. Look straight down from above, it sits just above the float bowls. You may need to move the vent hose out of the way to see it.
