Batteries

Eighteen Months ago I replaced the battery on the Adventurer. Cheap deal from the local 'Faast Fit' battery shop. Brand name, A Test, YB14L A2 (made in China). Cost $NZ80.00. Today replaced that with a Besco CB14L A2 (no markings as to where manufactured) cost $NZ61.00 on special from Super Cheap Auto Spares (there regular 25% of list price bargain basement sale).
Now I understand that the charging systems on our triples are crude and that constant attention is needed re topping up the battery with distilled water due to overcharging, this I have done over the last 18 Months. When I sit the Besco and the A Test alongside one and other, to all intents and purposes, they are identical. All dimensions, mouldings, caps , posts, cases are exactly the same. Event the weight (filled with electrolyte to the top line) is the same!

Now I believed Besco was a superior brand. Fitted to Harley's ex factory. So, am I in for a replacement battery in another 18 Months ?

Maybe you're running the air conditioner too often?
I got an agm type for my last battery, and so far it seems fine. I read a review of a new motorcycle the other day, and they were describing the charging circuit as outputting more juice so that more accessories could be added without overtaxing the system. Now I am assuming that they control the amount that gets back to charge the battery, regardless of what the alternator is capable of putting out, but since the owner can pop in whatever battery he wants later on, it makes you wonder if the battery manufacturers themselves are keeping up and building batteries that meet these specifications.
It has always seemed curious to me that a car battery, which has to survive under a closed hood where the temperature extremes vary widely, should last so much better than a garden tractor or motorcycle battery, which has more air flow around it and therefore does not experience as wide a temperature extreme. It must be the mass of the battery itself, or maybe better charging circuits? Or, that the seasonal use vehicles sit for long periods of time? If that is your case, then a good battery maintainer would be worth the money.
One of the resident experts here will likely give you a much better answer.

PS- One of my life goals is to get to NZ to fly fish for brown trout, and now that I am riding again, I wouldn't mind renting a Tiger and doing some long days as well.

I was going to go down the AGM path until I found out the price of one $NZ300.00. Thats 5 x $61 Bescos's. Sure the AGM (have one fitted in the Sprint) needs no maintainence, but!

A very worthy set goals you have. Not into fishing myself but believe it is World class out here. Insofar as a Tiger trip goes go to rentatriumph.co.nz.

AGM here about 2 years ago. Best decision ever.
I Never buy China products and it ran about $70 in the USA.
Wife's China battery didn't last one season and there was NO warantee. We get what we pay for.

Can you order an AGM from the USA? There are many on-line dealers.

Definitely the seasonal use. Need to keep MC, lawnmower, ATV, etc. batteries on a trickle charger in the off season. If you let your car sit for 3 months, the same problems would crop up....
