Speedometer Question

Bought a 98 TBS a couple of wweks ago. I removed the speedometer and was wondering if you need to lube or grease the connection between the cable and the speedometer. If so what is the best lubricant. Thanks

The only thing you have to lube is the inner cable, this should be lubed with high melting point grease. It is best to avoid lubing the top 5-6" of the cable.

so you don't have to lubricate anything inside the speedometer? i finally got a used assembly from a 96 Tbird with 68k on the clock. everything appears to be in working order, i'm just curious if any gearing inside could use a shot of high-temp grease or graphite

No, I don't think there is anything to be gained by lubricating inside the head. The gears and tumblers etc are plastic and grease combined with dust will just clog them up.

There is probably an oil filled damper inside the head, to damp out needle fluctuations, but that is sealed and needs no maintenance.

I should have said in the earlier post that the speedo drive should also be greased, that normally gets done at tyre change time.
