Bike going great!

I figured it's about time we had another 'all's well with the world' thread .

With my recent mods to the airbox, jetting & Ignitech ignition with throttle position sensor I had an 80 mile spin into Cork city today. A bit of sunshine, dry roads & light traffic. Bliss - the bike's running beautifully, a really sweet set up. Smooth running all the way, great response for overtakes in top gear. (Warp speed available in lower gears.) 17mph/1,000 rpm gearing.

After going back thru' some old threads I decided to have a go at modding the airbox. Rear box now disconnected, 1 extra 1.5" hole on the opposite side to the stock intake. K&N filter fitted. Mains are 115, pilots 40, 2.5 turns out on the screws. Dynojet needles 2nd notch from the top. (Keihin carbs.) Thunderbike 3-1 with 'dbKiller' baffle (not well named!) fitted. None of the feared issues with low & mid range torque/fueling. Topped up the tank near home, 55mpg (Imperial), happy with that. Nearly all the exhaust popping on overun has gone - just a hint left for a bit of character.

Roll on summer in Europe

Mike

I'll second your good tidings Mike.

After a few days of maintenance work my Thunderbird is running reasonable sweetly. My set-up is similar to Mikes who kindly helped me by balancing my carbs.

Stock air-box and filter - rear section connected.
One 1.5" hole drilled on the opposite side to stock intake
Mikuni Carbs
Stock needles (I forget which notch they're on but think it's top)
Mains - 120
Pilot - 40
3 into 1 stainless exhaust - Make unknown (not thunderbike)

Pulls good and strong right up to the red-line with no noticeable flat spots. Without the extra hole the carbs are starved of sufficient air at 4750 revs and upwards and won't pull cleanly. I haven't checked my mpg accurately yet but I have the feeling that it's a good bit less than Mike's 55mpg.

I replaced a leaking fork seal and will do the other one shortly. I have new dust covers on the way as the one I took off looks to be in very bad condition. I had to put it back on for the time being but will replace it when new ones arrive.

New indicators on the way also and I need to replace my bars and mirrors as they are quite badly pitted and rusted thanks to our perma-wet climate.

It looks like good weather here for the next few days though so I should get out for a spin to scrub in my new tyres as well. Happy days.

Mark

What's all this about good Spring weather in the emerald isle? It's unheard of..! Being originally from Limerick (but exported at a very early age) it seems to be always raining whenever I visit.

you must have some of that global warming going on

lol...sure, you know, 5 mins of Sun here gets everyone thinking it's the second coming

Earlier, warmer springs have been noted by lotsa folks these last few years, & this one drier than usual (so far) but it's a relative term, we've not quite gone all Iberian yet !

I'm not far from Limerick, Slinky, give me a shout when you're over

Will do! I have some family in Dooradoyle. One day I will get to take the bike over, but with me living about 15 miles from Gatwick it's just too easy to jump on a Ryanair jet.

Haven't dyno'd it, but very tempted with this set up! Mobfromcork has told me about a bike dyno in Cork city that'll do run for about $60 or so I think. Not bad... Cash is a bit tight just now & I've just booked for a Zappa gig in Holland whilst I'm supposed to be saving for my Euro bike trip.....

Would be interesting to see what the numbers are tho'. It's still pulling like a train at 8,500 so if I lift the rev limit who knows? What d'you think is safe with these engines ?

Make it so...

BTW, just done my head bearings with my new spanners courtesy of mr Irlmike. Nice one.

Cool Wayne, like the enthusiasm . That's 1 booked already for the Irish T3 rally...

(You're most welcome anyway - give me an excuse to do all of the above without the ferry bit )

Cheers
Mike

(Pleased to hear the spanners doing the biz too.)
