17t to 18t
Have a 99 Legend. I have posted before about how the bike is geared too low and how I am buzzing at 5200 rpms at 70 mph in 5th. Just switched out the 17t front sprocket for a 18t. What a difference. 4700 rpms at 70mph in 5th. Bike is still quick but is much faster at higher speeds. Also when accelerating to near redline and upshifting to the next gear there is now a lower drop in rpm which places the power curve in the sweet spot allowing more time to wind out the bike in each higher gear. Also down shifting is less abrupt and much smoother. Gear and gasket cost $34. Job took me about 3 hours. Best money I have ever spent on a mod. I know all you TBird guys already have a stock 18t, but any Legend guys still with the 17t should change out. If I was going to use the bike as a touring bike I would even consider going with a 19t. The bike has the balls to handle it.

Stock gearing on my bikes was 17/43.
They changed that, in some markets, in later years to 18/43.

I replaced the 17 with an 18 on my 95Tbird years ago. Has anyone gone to a 19? Any concerns?

I would go with a 19t (for a 5 speed) only if I was going to use the bike primarily for touring. Only concern would be a little added clutch wear getting bike going in 1st.

I didn't see the 18t on Bike Bandit. Did you get it from a dealer, and do you have a part #?

I did get it from the dealer. He gave me 2 choices. Stock gear for about $100 or after market for $35. You also have to buy a gasket and drain oil from bike before install. I went cheap and got the after market gear. Old 17t Triumph stock gear did look to be of higher quality with rubber runners for the chain fitted to each side of the gear. After market gear just a piece of metal but should be fine. Worked ok in its first 1000 miles. My dealer is D&D Triumph in Norfolk, VA 757-423-1082. Hope this helps.

I'm running 18/42 in my 5 speed which, if i calculated it right, is a gear ratio of 2.333. Requires a bit of clutch slipping when riding on the grass or making slow maneuvers but it is so much more peaceful on the road, at least when I want it peaceful. I had an old ducati 750 that had stock first gearing taller than this and it didn't have as much power. It worked fine except in traffic jams.
I have purchased but not installed the accessory comfy triumph seat.
Can't wait to ride again!!! (broken ankle) :

I have a 99 Legend too and I went with a 18/38 ratio. I don't recommend it for the big and tall crowd with stock engines and stock pipes but for a small rider with a properly tuned and modified engine/exhaust (my main jets are #135s) this is an excellent ratio with plenty of power on take-off and a nice RPM at interstate speeds. A shorter chain is required. Stock is 114 so you can remove a pair of links or install a 112.

There's wide choice of both front & rear sprockets for the triples. It might be worth mentioning that, for any given ratio, going larger at the front sprocket gives a little extra clearance from the swing arm chain slippers - might help reduce wear on these a little. I have 19/42 with 170/60 x 17 tyre, stock airbox with K&N, Dynojet, Thunderbike 3-1 pipe. This gearing on my 5-sp gives (theoretical) 143mph at 8250rpm. If I had to do a lot of town & or 2 up riding I'd go down to an 18t.
