Other Motorcycle: I wish!
Lately, my TBS seems to be running a bit hotter than usual.

As there is no temp guage , I am only guessing, but I have noticed an ocassional wiff of coolant and even some steam when I pull up at lights.

I have checked the coolant tank and it did not appear to be low and I cannot see any leaks for anywhere obvious.

Any suggestions as to how to 'easily' check the engine temp?

The scheduled Maint chart suggests changing the coolant every 2 years.

Since I now have just over 12k miles, should I be considering changing it?

Bob

Theres a small plastic elbow on the coolant header tank, it breaks, mine now has a brass one from the local hydraulics place. There was a discussion about it some time ago, It seems its quite common and easy to detect when the fuel tank is off.
They recommend to change you coolant every two years, I do it annually. Its your choice on that one.
An infra red heat detector is good for checking engine temps, can be bought quite cheaply these days from tandy stores (radio shack in the us?)

Wombat,

I agree with JWoodsie regarding an infrared thermometer. You can carry in your pocket and check temp just by pointing towards a particluar spot on the engine or radiator hose etc.

Check out this article on WebBikeWorld:

Check the coolant pressure cap gaskets too.

They've been known to harden and crack which can leave the reservoir level unaffected while the working coolant in the system decreases.

It wont be the age of the coolant, but I would change that at the recommended 2 year interval. When I did mine I flushed soem sludge out with the original blue stuff. Make sure you get a phosphate free anti-freeze in there.

I second the idea of taking the tank off to have a look. Check all the hose clips while you are at it, some have been known to be a little loose from the factory.

Finally got to do the flush of the cooling system and as Woodsie pointed out the little plastic elbow on the coolant tank was cracked.

There is two of these plastic elbows. One from the radiator cap (for expansion) and one for the overflow.

I will be replacing both while I am in there.

To Woodsie - Thanks Mate for the tip.
