Speedo Assembly

Evening Gents. I was on a rather chilly ride on New years eve and while hovering near triple digitson my 1999 Adventurer I backed off the throttle, and much to my displeasure I watched the speedo drop to 0. After investigating the next day I found the cable intact and still well lubed, and ran the bike for a few blocks with the cable disconnected at the speedo. I did not notice the cable spin at all. It appears to me the problem is in the wheel at the drive assembly. I looked up the assembly at bike bandit, and before I drop $120.00 into this part I thought I'd inquire for suggestions and or comments. I couldn't find a thread on this and wonder if I have a unique problem.

Backordered

I am very disappointed to find "Triumph" seems to have permanently back ordered the sending unit for my Speedometer. I'd love to hear if this part matches any other bikes Triumph makes, or perhaps any alternatives.... Anyone have a 99 Adventurer front wheel hanging around to cannibalize?

Other Motorcycle: Can't afford two!
Extra Motorcycle: Three would be insane
I'd bet you can find a used one if you ask around the salvage guys - alternatively contact Triumph ant in the UK

It may not be the speedo drive that is at fault- check also the dog that it engages with in the wheel hub.

A New level, about more complex things.......

Thanks for the note. It always seems when you ask a question, you often get a response on a new level. Great point about the dog. Thanks for the tip.

you beat me to the dog answer , l have had to bend the ears of the dogs back into shape three times so far on my Honda TransAlp. For any animal lovers out there, no dogs were ill-treated in this procedure!!

I just pulled my front wheel and the drive unit is locked up and that in turn tore up the drive dog.
Hey Mick, when you put the Kawi front end on your bike, how did you handle the speedo' drive?
Triumph or Kawi?

"I'd love to hear if this part matches any other bikes Triumph makes,"

Shows to be the same for 2003 BONNEVILLE & T100.

Speedo assembly update

I tore the wheel down, and indeed the assembly froze up and many bits of "Glitter." The Bearing cover was torn up, and the dog had no ears. I originally tried to get the new Speedo drive through Bike Bandit, and Triumph back ordered it to them (probably permanently) . I went to the local Triumph dealer and I was told stock at the factory was low, but available. I ordered and now received two seals and bearings, a new drive and dog. I picked up some shiny new Metzelers, a new chain and sprocket set. We are currently experiencing a "little" snow storm here in Denver, and so I took the wheels off and am having the tires and bearings installed today, If the shop is open. I plan on installing the new chain and sprockets this weekend, and should be road ready once the snow melts.....

Thanks for replies to my inquiries.

Bob
