British Helmet Test Ratings

There is a British government website showing helmet test ratings.

Some surprises with very expensive helmets getting two stars while other budget lines are rated at five stars.

Bound to be controversial but they claim they could save 50 lives this year by implementing this test rating system. I have a Shark which is rated at 4 stars - so a reasonable match for my 4 star head!

It's good to see a ratings system implemented - they seemed to do a good job with cars and Euro NCAP, but they need more information about what the ratings actually mean. A five star helmet is obviously better than a two star helmet, but it doesn't say what the difference actually is!

There are some shockers as you say - Arai RX7 gets only 3 stars but is £450; Lazer LZ6 gets 5 stars at only £60... and my NEW HJC IS-16 gets just 2 stars. Grr.

And there will be controversy as SHARP neither assesses penetration nor multiple impacts at the same site. But a ratings system is overdue and can only drive a positive change in safety.

Nice, My Shark RSR2 gets five stars!

I agree though, they should put what the stars mean.

it would be even more useful to know why, say, the RX-7 only got 3 stars. where did it perform less well than other helmets? what did the 5 star helmets do to better than the lesser rates helmets?
