Shoei Raid II or XR-1000 decision

Thinking of getting a new helmet, having borrowed someones Shoei XR-1000 I liked it very much. I was also thinking of Shoei Raid II. Has anyone got any useful comments on either of these. I am moving on from Arai-can't remember what because I don't like the noise

I can't comment on these exact models, but I do have both an X-11 and RF-1000 with what looks to be similar venting. The X-11 and RF are very similar with lining exception. both are extremely well vented as it looks like the Raid and XR will be. Depending on which model ARAI I think most Arai helmets have side pieces installed over the visor locking mechanism which helps the graphics look more complete, but makes them more noisy because of the aero effects. The Shoeis do not have these pieces and are more quiet for the most part. The higher up the price line you go you get a little more "plushy" lining and better graphic choices but essentially the same helmet so you should like the switch for the noise factor. However Arais tend to fit different than Shoei for different head shapes so be careful as the sizes will not match up quite the same - Same with Suomy (Way different especially with Spec 1R extreme) Try both on at the dealer for a bit to make sure of the fit

You will absolutely love the Shoei visor system - on and off in 15 sec if you are wearing a smoke screen during the day and need to change to a clear one for night. I love the Suomy and Arai graphics because of the side pieces, but man are they a PITA to change.

Hope this helps

Try them both on, look for comfort & fit

Helmets just aren't a good mail order item unless it's a replacement

Dittos on the Shoei visor changing system - love it

Good comments.

I found that the majority of my Shoei helmet noise was coming from the neck area, just below the ear. As I can ride and move my hand around that area, I can stop most of the noise......no, I will not keep riding that way . The vent noise is minimal.

I'm guessing it is a combination of factors, windshield configuration, my height, my neck size, etc. I've fooled around with different thickness pads and it has not helped.

I keep thinking an inflatible neck piece ala an air jordan would work.

But, even with the noise, I can still listen to music and hear Mrs. Zumo nagging that she is recalculating.

Hi there,

I've got a Shoei Synchrotec II that I found very comfy, if a tad noisy. My wife has a Raid II the same size of mine and I find it too tight around the forehead, giving me a headache after about an hour. I've just bought a replacement for my flip-up and was torn between the XR1000 and a Schuberth either S1 or R1. I found the XR1000 felt exactly the same as the Raid - a bit tight around the forehead and sitting a bit high so my chin wasn't completely covered. That and the fact that the Schuberth lids were on special for €300 (about 200 quid), fit beautifully (best fitting lid I'd ever tried on) and were the quitest thing ever meant I ended up stuck deciding between the R1 and S1. Went for the S1 in the end as it was quieter and the visor is a **** site wider than the Shoei lids. Just my two penn'orth.

I have had a Raid 11 for a couple of years now and I love it. As mentioned earlier the visor is a piece of cake to swap, good when you mainly use a black visor as I do. You also get the Pinlock visor insert, which will not steam up ever if you fit it correctly.
As for the noise, Shoei do whats called a "wisper kit" which is a extra pad which fits to the bottom of the helmet shell along with a net that fits below your chin and stops all the air coming up into the lid and keeps it really quite. I have used it in the hot weather and reckon it will probably get a bit warm in there.

I'll second SJM on the "whisper" kit for your Shoei helmet. That and ear plugs and you'll be riding in nice soft noise. Most of the noise comes from the rear.

I have the RF1000 and love it. But as others say, try them on first.

the x-11 fits me a little better, but i really like the matte black on the rf100, so i'm a little torn. I know i should go with the comfort, but i'm guessing both will break in just fine. Is there a noticeable difference in air flow between the two?

I just went from an HJC AC-3 3/4 helmet to the Shoei RF-1000. The Shoei fits me like a glove, less noise and I love the vents. Awesome helmet.
