Thumbs up Schuberth J1

Back in the spring I purchased a Schuberth J1 helmet, I liked the idea of an open helmet for the summer with some protection afforded by the chin guard.

I no some will tut at the loose of protection afforded compared to a full face but life full of compromises!

The additional visibility is a revelation after my last two C1 flips its quiet, light and ventilation is amazing.

I’ve done several long rides in it now 400-500 hundred-mile days it’s so comfortable and cool to wear only got to around 90C but the helmet is matt black!

Just started commuting into London again (bugger) and the added spiracle vision is giving me a definite edge filtering through the traffic and so far the helmet is not feeling to cold. I’ve been wearing a thick buff round by neck and a thin one as a facemask.
I had intended to use the C1 again for the winter put so far I have not felt the need but temps have not really been below 0C yet.
Also of note has been the lack of misting which is normally a plague for me at this time of year.

I hope Steve doesn't mind but I thought I'd add my opinion as I have a J1, also. I bought mine because it's a good compromise between a full-face lid (which are too confining for my liking) and a p*** pot lid, which, for me, doesn't cover enough of the face. Using my chin as a brake just does not appeal. :|

As mentioned above, the visibility is fantastic, with excellent peripheral vision.
It fits really well and doesn't move, even if I turn my head at speed. They're quite a small fit so either try before you buy or aim for a size bigger than normal.
It's not the quietest around but it's not too bad.
The flip-down sun visor is great, especially if you're riding through intermitent patches of sun and shade (a tree-lined road, for example). Flip it down in the bright bits and up when you enter the shade. I thought it was a bit of a gimmick at first but it's a really useful feature.
Ventilation is great, as you'd expect from looking at it. There's only a single vent on top but you can feel it working when you open it. It could get cold in the winter with the wind blowing up the open chin-area but wearing a facemask negates this.
It's lightweight and all-day comfortable.

I suppose I should quantify all this and say it's the first lid I've bought/worn in 5 years so I've nothing really to compare it to.

Thumbs up Be my guest

I’ve been wearing a thick fleece neck tube to close most of the opening with a thin wind proof balaclava. I tried a neoprene mask but not that comfortable for me.
So far I haven’t felt the need to change back to my flip lid.
As its my third Schuberth and that was the original attraction I forgot to mention the drop down tinted visor, personally I couldn’t be without it.
