I have had a number of different helmets including both Arai and Shoei. My current RF1000 is going to be replaced with another RF1000 or whatever the equivalent is next year when it is five years old. The Arai was a fine helmet, but the Shoei fits almost as well when brand new and just as well after a few months. The shield replacement ease makes a big difference, since I often take the shield off and wash it. The price difference is pretty compelling, too.

I also refuse to wear a helmet with lots of graphics. I am slow. I shouldn't look like I am pretending to be fast.

I've had 4 Arai's now. I broke a sidepod on my first one by being ham-fisted changing the visor. Never happened since. It's all in technique.

Other than that, both of them on my current helmet cracked as I stored it over the winter with the visor up - something I shan't do again!

Help me out on this one - how can storing your helmet with the visor up cause any damage. I know I missing something.

Well I'm surmising some here but......when the visor is open it puts more pressure on the very top edge of the sidepod.

This is where both my sidepods were cracked when I got the helmet off the shelf a few weeks ago, after a few months layoff.

It was fine when I put it away. I've never stored it that way before and never had the problem either.

Interesting about storing your helmet with the visor up...I wont try that one.

I got on the Arai web site shortly after I made the first post. Registered my helmet and opened a ticket. Got a response the next day and a replacement set of holders about a week later.

I'M happy with the service but I did have to ride around with the broken holder duct taped to my new helmet...lol...I was pissed then but now its over. I also have another set of holders my dealer got for me.

Well see how these hold up.

Zmilin, I'm glad to hear you got a better response to your needs than I got. And a 1 day turn around on response....nice! I did have to buy my parts, which I will admit went together without a hitch like previous times. The prices were fine for the replacement parts, it was the principle of the whole warranty thing. Oh well. Moving on

i have owned an arai quantum f for over 7 years replaced the visor umpteen times never had any problems . infact have had the same two original visors since i bought it , clear and smoke.. did 4000ml around europe in a month . and found this helmet to be exceptionaly comfortable . now just bought a quantum 11 . had shoeis . agvs and lots of others before, but none come close?these visors are very resistant to scratches.. and saved my noggin at a 70mph get off a small scrape and lots of dirt inside lost eyeport vents but other wise no damage, cant say same for me

Something sounds fishy here - I am just not buying that storing the helmet visor up will cause any problems. If I am not mistaken most helmet manufacturers recommend storing your helmet on some type of grating or drying rack with the visor open to allow air to circulate through out the helmet. I am thinking some kind of preexisting flaw that just reared its head the last time you put the visor up - with all the complaints on this issue that I have heard sounds like a design flaw.

Well I'd say you're wrong.

This is the only time I stored any of my Arais in this way for any length of time and the only time that the side pods cracked on both sides in the exact place the visor was resting.

So I'd say it was pretty conclusive.

Definitely wouldn' t be the first time I was wrong, but if I spent $600 or so on a helmet that breaks just because the visor is left in a static postion I would want to know why. It just doesn't sound plausible (IMHO) that such a superior product as a Arai helmet would be damaged by leaving the visor up.
