Please forgive me for being on another one of rants...

But I just ordered a replacement face-shield for my Shoei J-Wing helmet. It came with a clear shield, so I finally broke down and ordered the tinted shield that I'd prefer. Now... are you sitting down? The cost was $41.75 plus $11.00 for shipping, for a grand total of $52.75. Yea... (1) face-shield.

So just in case your considering which helmet to buy. I'd suggest checking into the cost of replacement parts before you take the plunge. FWIW I'm not sure the other brands are any less expensive. But I do know this...
"Shoei helmet parts ain't cheap!"

gulp... I thought the $24 for a new shield for my Caberg was bad enough...

Why is it that "top end" manufacturers do this. We all know that the plastic they are using isn't any more expensive than the plastic in an HJC.. granted volumes may have some effect on costs, but that much...

This is similar to what Triumph does. Most of the OEM parts they sell are just plain userously priced. The Triumph Oil is perfect example. Why should it cost any more than premium oil at an auto parts store.

This is the kind of detail that would keep me from buying many products.. Porsche, Ducati etc... they price their items based on the status, not the actual value or cost.

(kicks soapbox and stomps off.... )

Couldn't agree more. I have also been looking at prices for a tinted shield for my new Shoei XR-1000 and have almost fallen over at the price. Its a pity there are no aftermarket manufacturers (that I know of) making shields for helmets, the price gouging is really quite unbelievable. This is worse for things like filters, bearings, seal, etc which are usually made by big suppliers and repackaged to sell at prices many times multiplied from the original.

I know motorcycles are a niche market but c'mon

Don't think we will see shoei aftermarket screens anytime soon - they have a registered patent on the screen locking mech.

Keep an eye on e-bay - I have bought two iridium blue (normal retail about $60) for $29 from people getting rid of helmets and the like.

I agree with the mark-ups - they are ridiculous

I will give Shoei their props though - I change faceshields twice daily and they have got it over everyone else with the ease of replacement system they now have.

Try an AGV XR-2, shields run about $60!!! I got a great deal on my helmet so it evens out, but now I've got to be extra careful with my shields.
