Avatar problem
I'm used to the draconian upload limits that pervade the internet regarding avatar size. I mean, 80 x80 pixels or 19.5 kB is pathetic in the broadband age, but I can work around it. What really grinds my gears is when I'm hit with a "no animation" rule.
Do you actually have a good reason for denying my use of this as an avatar? Or am I going to have to use my "prohibition roundel" here?

The animation by itself is cool, but if one considers all of the "items" that must load on an average page here on Rat.Net, it would be excessive if everyone had an animated avatar. Even today, some computer configurations don't work well with multiple animations.
Hope this helps.

No. Even my old 366 MHz thinkpad from 1999 can handle a full page of animated avatars, especially with a 19.5 kB size limit in place. So, on technological grounds, your argument is spurious.

What are you running for a computer now? What OS? As OS's "improve", we lose something. Look at Vista vs XP. My XP laptop with a slower CPU can handle more than (and is faster than) my Vista laptop.
Shawn does a great job as far as I am concerned (and I like the unofficial KISS policy for us non-nerds).

I don't understand what point you're trying to make but I've got an 8-core Mac Pro with 12 GB of RAM and a MacBook Pro with 2 GB. Both of these machines triple-boot Leopard, Ubuntu 8.04 and XP.
I used my thinkpad 600e, which now runs ubuntu 7.10, as an example because it is considerably less potent than any other computer I own. However, it has no problem with a page of animated .gif files, even on dial-up.
My point is that, while there were once good, technical reasons to prohibit animations on text-based forums, those days are now long gone, especially given that the recent migration was supposed to bring everything up to date. If the admins here don't like animated avatars due to personal bias, then they should just say so instead of hiding behind invalid technical excuses.
And yes, Shawn does do a good job, but that doesn't make him perfect. And don't get me started on the decision to lump the cruiser and classic twins together...

I bow before your superior computing power... ...but it doesn't change the fact that most of us are not so blessed, either in terms of computer or connection speed. The reason given for no animated avatars is valid enough in the practical, real world.
Even if that weren't the case your continued complaints to the contrary come across as argumentative, or bragging, or both... like animated avatars themselves, another way of drawing more attention to yourself.

What's with the animated smiley? Are you taking the piss?
And it's not about my computer power. As I keep stating:
A 9 year old laptop has no problems with a page full of animated gifs. If anyone is running anything with less power than that, it's unlikely they can access the net at all!

I am one of the many that fine animations annoying and distracting.
Cal6n,
With all you superior computing power and knowledge of things technical, maybe you should start your own forums and then you could have all the animations that your heart desires.

Flowers do not help keep you bike running. IMO, having animated avatars is like Mariah Carey, "Too Flowery" (per Phil Collins)
