I like the smartwool liner gloves - they're great! They definitely are liners, and will snag on things if worn as a normal glove.
They insulate very well - you can touch a hot motor case and not even feel it through the liner.... it'll keep heat from moving (out or in). NOT windproof.
for synthetic fibers, I get the cheapest thinnest things REI carries, as my winter gloves block wind already. Not as warm, but very thin and good in a pinch.
NOTE: with heated grips, the smartwool is no good because it keeps the warm grips from ever getting to your hand... the synthetic fiber liners don't have this problem.
