Anybody utilize map software to plan rides? If so, what have you found that works well for creating route plans for Pack Rides?

I use Microsoft MapPoint because it's part of my MSDN Subscription (all the MS developer tools). I do wish that MapPoint would let me hide the "waypoints" and just show the highlighted road. Sometimes people confuse the numbered waypoints as route numbers when printed out on a black and white laser printer (they are yellow squares in color).

Microsoft Streets and Trips is pretty popular and I think it uses the same raw data (not sure though).

Here's an example from MapPoint:

I have used Rand Mcnally Trip Planner a few times.

I use DeLorme's Street Atlas software to prepare cuesheets. I map out the route, then print out the directions to a file. I then import the file into Excel, modify the columns to suit my needs, shade every other line for quick reading, and print it out in large enough type for my old eyes to read w/o glasses. Works great for me! You can even edit the roads to suit local names, and you can add "routable" roads to the maps where Street Atlas doesn't show new roads.

I use the PC based Garmin software called MapSource. I can print each section in small consecutive pages which I staple together into a small trip booklet. I also send the same file in an e-mail to download into a Garmin unit that other members may have.
GOOD RIDING.....

I am with Gary... I use Microsoft Streets and Trips.

The ability to drag the troute to whatever road you want makes for fun planning. Another feature I love (I suppose other software has it) is to put in MPG figures, breaks and such in so you get a comprehensive idea of what the ride will be. Especially helpful if you have a largish group with different fuel economy/tank sizes.

You can usually pick up the current version at a Costco (don't know about BJ's) for something like $30. And then you get the $20 rebate. Can't argue with that.
