Sunglasses or what?

So Spring is here (northern hemisphere) and we can reasonably expect (some) more sunshine than we've had for a while. What does everyone do about keeping it out of their eyes?

So far I've used sunglasses inside my fullface helmet with clear visor but the sun in England comes and goes and I'm looking for a more automatic/convenient option. I don't want to get involved in visor swapping as that's even more hassle than putting sunglasses on and off. Short of getting a new helmet with integral sun visor what else could I try?

I assume you're talking about riding into the sun?

Over here where the sun shines more often than not, I use a strip of 1 inch tape across the bottom of my visor to keep the direct sunlight out. My commute to work in the morning is into the sun and I find that raising the visor so that the tape blocks out the sun work a treat.

I used to have a tinted visor but found it a total waste of time and money because once the sun went down it was too dark. I haven't used those iridium visors so can't say if they're any good or not.

I always wear a pair of polarised sunglasses (during the day) but not the black/dark lens types rather the gold/bronze as it works better for me in lower light levels.

Maybe you can get some photochromatic lens sunnies such as the MAKO brand?

I use a Scorpion EXO700. Clear visor. $6 (usd) ASO sunglasses. Works for me! They are flexible, safety glasses, and I don't hassle with changing visors. "Photochromic" visor don't get that dark anyway..and are VERY expensive so why bother when you can take 2 minutes to put on your "el-cheapo" sunglasses? Plus THAT way you have sunglasses to wear when you take your helmet OFF!

Mirrored shield works best for me

Glasses just aren't as comfortable, and don't have the field of vision

I prefer the sunglasses inside a clear shield as well. Just easier the carrying an extra shield and i like to ride with my shield up during the summer for the fresh air. That way my eyes are still protected from both sun and bugs and i still get the breeze.

I use the flip down sun shield on the Nolan N102. Nolan prefers to call it their VPS (Vision Protection System). I believe HJC just came out with a similar system. I find that I only need sunglasses anymore if I wear my Shoei.

Note: I also use a light smoke tint face shield on both helmets. Not really sufficient for eye protection in bright sunlight but they do prevent sunburn on my face.

In Summer

I use an Iridium visor on my Suomy lid and in winter I change it back to clear.

I find this excellent for our harsh sunlight in South East Queensland.

Does anyone have experience with Shoei's progressively tinted (or semi-tinted) visors? Do they work both in dark and in sunlight as they claim?

Most visors that "change" tint do NOT change to DARK. They change to "smoke" which is slightly more dark than clear. Bottom line.... $65 for a visor that STILL requires sunglasses (not to mention that you have to lug that awkward visor around with you AND change it), or $6 for cheap sunglasses that work fine with CLEAR visor (that you don't have to change or carry change of). Seems like a simple choice to me One day technology will catch up with us and offer a "visor solution" that works. Today is NOT that day.

Ride with eyes closed (use third eye gizmo).

Have Schuberth with primary full face clear visor and flip-up-down (with gloved hand) DARK, internal, fighter-pilot-visor. Additionally, it's a full face flip-up helmet (which I could not wear a full face helmet without otherwise). When the sun's out, just flip internal DARK visor down. Big sun glasses fit inside too. At night, use clear full face visor...

Also, have Leon Jeantet pilot goggles (takes a little getting used to). Interchangable dark, clear and amber lenses.

Amber cuts glare day or night.

Backpack a bunch of glasses (in case). I have a sunglass museum trying to find the right combination.

Hope this helps!
