I use the Garmin Quest 2. For Garmin GPS units I have found the best price at www.gpsnow.com
I like the portability of the Quest 2 use it in my car and on my bike.

I bought the Zumo 450 thinking I'll never use the features in the 550 and I'll save a couple of hundred. I may regret that decision, but for now it's great. Never get on the bike without it.

Checkout the Lowrance iWay 600C. You'll be quite satisfied.

+1 on the Garmin Quest 2. I've been using it for the last year as a speedo/nav unit on my streetfighter Honda and have been REAAALLY happy with it. Wateroproof, cheap, looong battery life means you don't have to wire it into the bike. And as long as it comes with the newest software it has the same number of waypoints and info as some of the newest GPS units.

Only complaint has been that it does take a bit for it to recalculate routes. But for 200-400 bucks less than the newer equivalents, it's a hell of a bargain.

The Zumo 550 has two features I would not want to be without.

1.
TTS. It says to you in .2 miles turn right on 146th Street.

Other units say in .2 miles turn right

2.
Zumo is the only Garmin that does not change custom routes that you create in MapSource and load onto the GPS. All other Garmin units will recalculate that custom route that you spent hours creating.

http://zumoforums.com for great info about it.

And all the other stuff like waterproof, left hand controls, glove friendly touch screen..... the list goes on..

Is this the one you are thinking about.

There was another solution posted somewhere, although much more expensive than this one. Like you, I can't remember the name of that one.

+2 on the Garmin Quest 2 for "testing the waters". You can pick up a refurb on-line for $170-$220, it has a 20 hour battery life, and is completely waterproof.

If you want to see if GPS for you, and outdoor friendly is important, it is a great place to start.

Garmin makes so many different models it is totally mind boggling.
The Nuvi line is a prime example there must be at least 15 different current models in that line. Each model has a different set of features.

The learning curve with GPS is much steeper than it should be.

So take your time, read about the features that you are interested in, then find the units that have those features. To make matters worse Garmin does not have completely up to date documentation about all of their units. Some little features have been added to the Zumo line via firmware updates and those things are not fully documented.

I took a trip with a friend (in a cage) we used his GPS. When I saw what it does and started studying the features available I decided it is the kind of technology that I will use and get a lot of good from it.

Take your time and you will find something that will suit your budget and enhance your riding experience.

I've used mine more in the cage than on the bike so far. I've tried using it to lead local RAT rides and not had such good luck with that. Mostly because I am still learning how to use it (I tend to forget to change some important settings before beginning that type of ride). I've been on three long bike trips with it. I found interesting twisty roads that I would not have found otherwise because those roads are not on usual paper maps. That is my main purpose in using it, and for that alone I will keep struggling with the learning curve.

I am convinced Garmin is the best manufacturer of consumer GPS devices because their customer service record is very close to Stellar. I hear stories of them fixing things after warranty period is over quite regularly.
