noise cancelling earbuds
I'm looking for a set of earbuds that I can wear inside my helmet. I do get quite a bit of wind noise inside my helmet and was looking for a pair of earbuds that would cancel out some outside noise. Has anybody found a set that works well? I took a look at Sony's noise cancelling earbuds that were $99,but before I drop the money, I thought I would ask here first.

Thank you
Andy

I've got a set of ear plugs made by a company called Ultimate ear. Good they are too.

Try looking at www.ultimatear.com

So-so Sony
There are a lot of choices out there; many of them so-so (like Sony's earbud line), and some that are very highly regarded. This topic has been covered pretty thoroughly in www.sport-touring.net so you may want to do a search there (I know because I contributed). About a year ago, I opted for a pair of Shure E3c earbuds and I've been extremely happy with them: the sound quality is excellent, they're built to withstand considerable punishment, and they're very comfortable... what more could you want? The other prime contender seems to be the Etymotic E6i. Frankly anything produced by either of these companies will easily surpass anything Sony has to offer, so save yourself some angst and do a little research on line before you decide. By the way, both the Shure and Etymotic earbuds will fit well under a helmet, but there are several that won't, the 99.95 (list price) Bose offerings for example. Good luck!

Cheers!

I moved this to the Gear and Gadget area. There is a better chance of getting more answers here.

I Use Ultimate Ear monitors with an Autocom. This is a nice way of blocking out road noise and having music in your ears. Because you are not trying to over power road noise you can have the volume quite low and still get a great sound. So it must be good for year ears.

I do find that the bass on mine is a bit rubbish. No where near as good as a set of standard ipod ear buds. But probably the best custom fit bike monitors you will find.

Before you spend a lot of money on these, try out the skullcandy ink'd ear buds that you can buy from Target for $15. They're washable, have good sound, and it doesn't matter if you trash them.

I've been riding w/ the Entymotics for about two years. They fit under the helmet well and block wind noise as well as a dedicated earplug. They're usually available for a bit less money than the Shures.

http://www.complyfoam.com/noise-redu...-mobile-phone/

I use them and they they work fairly well. They also offer decent hearing protection. You can rig the phone/mp3 ear phones so that it forms a pretty decent in-helmet system. I use mine with the my phone/mp3 player combo. I attached a little piece of velcro tap to keep the noise reducing microphone in front of my mouth and ran the wire around the side to keep it out of the way. My phone atomatically shifts to phone from mp3 when I get a call. While I don't recommend dialing phones or screwing with music lists while riding I do have Jot http://jott.com/default.aspx speed dialed on my phone so that I can dial any of the numbers in my directory by hitting one button and use the Jott voice activated directory to make calls. Its a pretty good system.

...noise reduction
...mp3 music
...cell phone

cost under $70 bucks...oh...I guess you need to add a few cents for the velcro tape.

Hope that helps

Canucks_fan has a really good point with the skull candy headphones. I bought a pair on a whim after reading this thread to see how good they work and I was shocked to find that they do indeed block more road noise than a pair of legit ear plugs like we use in our machine shop. If you aren't the kind of person who enjoys spending 4x as much on headphones then I highly recommend these. And for those of you who honestly believe that $100 earbuds are worth it, more power to you, but with road noise I reallllly doubt that the difference is very noticeable.
