I try to stay in Hampton Inn's, although they are not the least expensive hotels, they almost always have a large covered area at the entrance. I have always been able to park under this overhang, and it is always lighted and close enough to the lobby that I figure it is the safest location. Then I grab one of their luggage carts and drag all my stuff inside.

Here are a few of us under the canopy somewhere in NC last winter. My Sprint is outside the photo.

I don't know what it is like in your neck of the woods but over here there are a number of "motorcycle friendly" hotels/motels/pubs that have a shed or garage where motorcyclists can lock their bikes up for the night - could be worth asking as you go along your travels. If the bike is out of sight that should deter the opportunistic thief.

I use a very simple anti-tamper switch which is made up of a mercury switch and a toggle switch. Located under the seat it is set up so that when the bike is placed upright (off the side-stand) the mercury switch completes the circuit to my Stebel horn (very loud), the toggle switch is for arming disarming.

I know the setup works but I don't know if it deters the thieves as no-one has tried to pinch my bike yet (touch wood)

I'm bringing my bike "cover". From what I've read, it's as good a deterent as any. For some reason, thieves look at this a more trouble than cutting a chain. It takes time and brings attention to them.
Worth a try.

Almost every bike made today (and for some years now) has a steering lock. Every one knows this. This means a bike theft will be a "pick up an go" deal. If I don't have a cover available I use "layers" of security. If I'm making a quick stop I'll just lock the steering and use a bicycle cable lock to lock my helmet and jacket to the bike. If I'm "overnighting" I'll bring helmet and jacket inside and lock the steering, use disc lock with alarm (to stop "touchers") and a LED blinking light near instruments (fake) to warn away (lookers with bad intentions). About all you can do. If enything else...place a "protected by GLOCK" sticker on it. Maybe they'll think twice
