I'm not so sure it's necessary to mount a GPS on the bike itself.
I think I'd prefer to reference my Blackberry now and then which has GPS, TeleNav, InfoSpace Find It and Google maps. Not to mention.. it's a phone, etc.

I did it solo. It was a great trip! The Canadian Rockies, especially the Columbia Ice Fields, are too beautiful to put into words. Absolutely unbelievable! 1st day, Omaha Nebraska to Sheridan Wyoming. 2nd day, Sheridan to Kalispel Montana. 3rd day, Kalispel to Jasper Alberta via Radium Hot Springs. 4th day, Jasper to Kamloops British Columbia via Valemont. 5th day, Kamloops to Nelson British Columbia for the Kootenay Raid. 7th day, Nelson to Butte Montana. 8th day, Butte Montana to Omaha Nebraska. In Omaha for a day and a half and then the 11th day rode 830 miles to Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio with a buddy of mine. Camped at VMD for two and a half days. 14th day rode from Mid-Ohio back to Omaha. 6225 miles in a little over ten days of actual riding. As soon as I can find the time I'll do it again, except this time I'll go back south out of Jasper to Lake Louise then west through Golden and Revelstoke then south to Nelson.

Little bit of thread highjacking sorry....

That sounds amazing! My sister lives in Nelosn and my mom in the Kootneys. If you come back that way drop me a line and I'll join you for a bit.

I bought a really good compass at a sporting goods store for about $15.00, and when I need to know where I am I pull over, take out my compass and figure out which was is up and go from there.
I think the less things on a bike to distract you the better- but then I am usually wrong about most things, just ask my wife.

I just upgraded my phone plan from $20 a month to $30 and got $140 a month in calls and a Nokia Navigator 6110 in the deal. So far I can hear it under a helmet on the freeway if the ear plugs stay in correctly. So am quite happy with a phone that does GPS - only 1 device to carry.

I used to have one as well - I mean I never knew where I was but I did know where I was meant to be

Trouble is the b#ggers kept falling off at high speed!

I prefer the folding map, grease pencil & compass system. Cheap, reliable & no electronics.

Garmin 2730

has MP3 and XM works great and fits perfect down on the triple tree with a gadget mount. You can still find some new at a great price.

Positive and Negative

I used to love the maps and still use them to assist in plotting a ride but pre routing on MapQuest allows me to go on roads or routes i would never normally go on and allows me to reroute if I get off track. I have the GPS plugged into my ear so it is less distraction then trying to look down at a map on a tank bag. I also like to route the way to a spot and then wonder on the way home and rarely touch a highway The negative is that I don't know how to get anywhere without it now! I think it's the best tool that I have ever bought for my touring bikes and you can pick up a Garmin unit that is a few years old with less bells and whistles for between $100-$200...
