THAT far south? It was in the 30s this morning, the ground was frosted and it will be in the 30s-40s all week for the overnight lows (see: cold-azz morning rides into work). No - this aint the great white north, but once you're accustomed/acclimated to the region, when it gets below 40 here ... it's COLD.
Hey - at least Drew and his new duds will look retro-cool when he shows up looking like a popsicle.

Me personally, I wear my leather racing jacket under a pair of Walls Blizzard Proof coveralls from wall mart. Available in black, easy on over clothes and jacket, and warm. if you go down you are protected by your jacket and heavy canvas of the coveralls. You will want to invest in a good heavy pair of boots with good liners in them.
I am still riding when others are sitting at home fondling their bikes. A good rain suit helps too.....bout a 100 bucks at cycle gear. Even fits over the coveralls....

I'll say this: 40 degrees in the Washington DC area where my parents live often feels colder than 10 degrees in Vermont. Reason? It's effing damp down there, while the very cold days here are bone-dry. That damp cold chills you to the bone.
As for jackets: a leather with sheepskin lining ought to be good (if it was good enough for B-17 bomber crews with open gun ports at altitude, it should be good enough for a Georgia winter on the ground). But that said, leather as a material can get cold and sap away warmth from lower layers. If it's below 50 degrees or so, I'll wear my textile jacket when going on a longer ride -- it keeps me warmer than the leather given the same layers underneath.
