i just broke in my sidi canyon boots and first gear earl leather jacket on a 600 mile trip this weekend. i need to get one of those fleece balaclava thingys that bonnielass and dirk mentioned bc the wind about froze my ears off. luckily i only spent about 1hr in the really cold, ~40 degree, stuff.

the earl isn't a bomber jacket like you want drew. but i got my stuff from new enough. if you find what you like on their site i definitely recommend them. i spoke to them 3 or 4 times by phone asking them questions about the gear i was looking at. everyone was nice, helpful and put up with my stupid questions. didn't pay a dime for shipping and got all my stuff in 2days since i live the next state over from them.

I wore it in Chicago and was very warm wandering around the windy city at 30 degrees + wind chill.
It's not exactly good for crash protection, but great for wind protection while riding. If safety is a concern, get a thin riding jacket at a bike shop to wear over it as a shell. I have an Icon Merc that I sometimes wear over it.
I have the same jacket/boots/getup except I do have a shaved head, and I listen to punk/oi/ska etc and like to drink and well, drink.

That jacket is warm!

Dudes.
Alpha Industries is the company that makes real pilot jackets. I have been using it for two winters riding scooters, but not my Bonnie. I am sure Dainese is the best bet for all around use. But I REALLY love this one. Cheers.

It seems like not very long ago we were discussing warm-weather gear, and lots of folk wrote that they thought it was too warm to wear protective gear at all. Guess Mother Nature caught up with us.

Lots of great jackets around. I personally go for the layering-approach. A good quality sweater (cashmere is very warm and not very thick), something warm around the neck (fleece neck-warmer), and a high-style leather-trouser with room inside for woolen underwear. If I could lay my hands on a WWII-bomber style jacket, that was made for Motorcycling (ie with protection), that would be the bizz.

After you find that retro theme jacket that fits you and your ride ... get yourself a http://www.gerbing.com/ heated liner so you can be warm while still looking cool.

Thanks everyone for your input and links.

I think I've settled in on two good choices for our seemingly mild GA winters.

- the 40 Long I tried on in the surplus store seemed to have enough play for the riding position.

Those coupled with my Triumph Jeans, and DESTROY square toed boots I'll be a rockin'.

oh and the Davida -

LOVE IT!!
I also moved over from a scoot to the Bonnie. However, I wear this one, as it's much more abrasion resistant and the cordura fabric keeps much of the chill out.

The black with the black stripe looks sharp, and the protection is top notch.
