What's the difference between CE and GP armor?

As the title says.

A plagiarized answer:

The CE armor (European spec) is made of hard foam pieces encapsulated in softer foam. The hard material is similar to the inner shell of a helmet. This type of armor is designed to crush during an impact. In other words, it won't work twice. If you land on it, you must replace it. In terms of comfort, it is between the foam armor and the GP armor. It is not overly bulky and it's flexible, but it is hard.

The GP armor was developed for track use. It gives a higher level of protection, but it is bulkier and not as comfortable, especially for long periods in the saddle. It is made of hard plastic sewn to a layer of hard foam.

CE is a testing standard - armor made from any material that dissipates a certain amount of force in a crash can qualify. Cheap CE armor is usually a rubbery material. The nicer stuff is made in a variety of ways.

GP Type armor generally refers to stuff that has a plastic shell and is good for multiple impacts - there's no testing standard, per se.

Things get more complicated when you look at back protectors, which have both CE I and CE II standards...

My Vanson gear came with CE foam. After a crash 4 years ago, I replaced the knee, shoulder and elbow with GP hard armor. It's funny how, after a wreck you decide to upgrade all your protective gear! I feel safer now. It takes a bit of adjustment, but it's not uncomfortable even on longer trips.
