Any input on an easy to use yet secure bike lock? Thanks in advance. :hammer:

The ones designed to lock the brake calipers seem compact, but a couple of strong guys and a pick up truck and your Daytona could be in the wind.

Yup a disc lock is your best bet for short term or low risk parking. At home, or in higher risk situations, you really want to attach the bike to something. Two guys with 2x4's can pick up and bike and put it into a van or truck amazingly quickly though. I have an On-Gaurd 'Noose' style chain that works great. OnGaurd and Kryptonite are the two name brands I know of.

Locks aren't cheap, and if you go with one of those two brands, the more you spend, the better protection you get. Also worth considering, especially if you're only using a disc lock, is where you park your bike. Some of my friends try to hide their bikes when they park, but my strategy is to put it front and center, where people will notice if someone tries to rip it off. At home I keep it in the garage and covered up, and never work on where I'm visible from the street. Parking somewhere inconvenient for a truck to get at is also good - the more difficult it is to carry the bike away the better.

The bottom line: if professional thieves want your bike, they will have it. Period. I've read of thieves breaking into garages and taking bikes that were chained to anchor points sunk into the concrete floor. Serious thieves drag your bike to the curb as a truck with its hydraulic tail down pulls alongside. Bike onto tail, truck away as tail is lifted up and bike dragged inside. From the time they first touch your bike to the time the truck is around the corner: less than 60 seconds. And that includes using bolt cutters on your chain. (Man, that's depressing.)

Disc locks are really to ward off the opportunist and semi-serious thieves. Use whichever one seems to have the best lock and is weather-resistant. And get one of those coiled-cord things with loops at each end (one goes on the lock hasp, the other on your grip), to remind you to take the ***** thing off before you try to ride away!

I've learned that one the hard way. Looked stupid twice, never quite dropped the bike... I've gotten lucky - didn't actually damage anything

All true. Most thieves, however, are opportunist. Even "professionals" will usually go for the least protected opportunity unless it's specifically your bike they want. A Lo-jack is a good investment if you hide it well.

Yep, my goal is to make my bike as inconvenient and low-profile to thieves as possible. I think we've got a headstart on that riding Triumphs - you don't see all the parts for a Triumph but the frame on eBay quite as often as a GSX-R.

That certainly is true with cars. The most stolen cars are the ones with the most abundant parts available. Also easier to blend in with the population. Even Ducs are starting to be a common sight, at least here in CA. Triumphs kind of stand out. Although the Speed Triple will probably start falling into the sights of thieve rings as they continue to grow in popularity especially with younger riders.

Xena - disc lock with alarm - Won't stop a pro (not much will short of the mombo On-Guard chain around the frame and attached to a ground eyelet), but the alarm will deter the opportunist. very loud and well made

XENA
