G'day,
Does anybody use, or have any ideas about, bike to bike radio communication systems. All I want is something that works, is easy to operate, is not too expensive, and is reliable. Thats not too much to ask for, is it?
I am not looking for a helmet which has been factory installed with the latest hi-tech stuff from NASA (or even NSA) but I don't want junk either. So if anyone has experience with any of these systems, please help.
In my search so far I have found the MotoComm SK55 & SK75 and the Nady MRC11X. Are these any good? Is there better without breaking the bank?
All help appreciated.

Air Rider
Intaride
Starcom1
align. Baehr
I have a Starcom. i like the looks of the Intarider because the connection at the helmet is much easier to use. Starcom, Motocom, Autocom, Baher all use a mini DIN connector that is awkward to align properly. The intaride is a single pin with multiple rings so only one thing to align. Much quicker and lots easier to do.
I did not know about Intaride when I bought mine.
For simple bike to bike a FRS/GMRS radio that has VOX and a helmet headset is all that's necessary.
clearcom
Edsets
Starcom, Autocom, and motocom also sell headsets only.
The FRS/GMRS radio also has alot to do with the useability of this kind of setup so don't scimp on that part if you want reliable communication.

My wife and I have IMC Motorcom & FRS/GMRS radios ,the push to talk and vox are a pain to use, if you can find something that is true push to talk, it would be less frustrating and more user friendly.

I have the Nady you mention - I found it to be very useful at town and mid-speeds when riding with my mate who had the same device. But at highway speeds and with greater separation between the bikes - not very good at all. I think the fault lies in the cheap headsets rather than the unit itself. The combination of wind roar over the mike and the single speaker was too much.
By the way - we had no luck with the VOX operation, we always used the Push to Talk.

My wife and I have the Chatterbox FRS X2 and GRMS X1, and they are fairly foolproof. The only negative is that the wife doesn't like having the brick attached to her helmet. So far, I haven't seen anything better.
Difference between the two: X2 has a two mile range, whereas the X1 has a 5 mile range. Obviously, for the two of us, we only get two miles, but that is more than adequate. I just happened to get a good deal on the X1, used from a friend.
I may look into the other options that were posted, just in case there is a better option than Chatterbox.

I have the chatterbox also. Works decent. I dont like the helmet mounting. Also I think the speakers stink. I spliced in different earplug speakers and I can hear better.
Im still on the look out for better.

Are any of these capable of multiple connections. That is, comms between a group of three or four bikes?

if you are using radios, they are all capable of multiple users. Keep in mind that the 'privacy' feature of frs/gmrs radios is only a sub tone group identifier. that means that their is a subtone that when set your radio and anyone else with the same subtone setting will only be able to hear yourselves. The rest of the world that has no privacy feature set will be able to hear you as well. In other words, it is an input filter setting, not really a privacy setting (cuts out the riff-raff you will hear).
I have a Moto-Comm intercom. I think of it as priced well for what it does (wife wont wear a headset so I don't know what it will do). It shouldn't be confused with a a J&M, Bahr, Autocomm, etc. But neither should the price. In addition I purchased a supposedly new (old stock) system that had a broken headset (clearly it had been used) and not only did MotoComm replace it, they sent it with a lower sensitivity microphone (my bike is loud). All for no charge! Works for me....

I use the Collett comunicator, works great. If privacy is an issue you can get them programmed for your group to a private/non common frequency.
