Aside from the tool kit (and my Gerber multi-tool) and a tire gauge, here's a simple gadget I never leave home without:
Sure, you could try to find a rock, a piece of tree bark, whatever. But it was, like, $2 and fits in the jacket pocket nice and flat so you never notice it until you need it. Can't tell you how many times I've used it.

I finally coughed up a few bucks for the carbon fiber plate from Aerostich, complete with the shoe string and red "remove before flight" ribbon.

It's a "cyclefoot" - just a little plastic gizmo to put your kickstand on if you're parked in the dirt, grass, or even asphalt on a hot day. The fact that it looks like a foot is just a goofy added bonus. $2 worth of insurance and amusement.
Most bike shops have 'em or you can google it.
