The center stand is not hard to install, just the springs, but there's plenty of experience here to help with that, and when it's done, it's done.
I have the center stand and the Sears aluminum lift, because it's much lighter than the lift shown above--I can carry it easily--and it seems to be better-made, but it costs twice as much.
My cheapskate neighbor uses a few pieces of dimensional lumber of a suitable size, screwed together, covered with s***** carpet, and with the pipe handle, as described above. It works surprisingly well, and the cost is in the single digits or less, depending on what you have lying around.
I think the only trick for the wood thing is to get the dimensions right: Looking from the side, one side of the wood block has to just slide under the bike, and the other side is a bit longer to lift the frame a couple inches off the ground when the pipe is pulled. It works like a center stand.
