I'm considering getting one for an upcoming trip, but would like to hear from others with experience using this (or a similar) unit.

I haven't tried Spot, but I have a friend who travels with one all the time. She's an AMA exec and is on the road promoting women and motorcycling a lot during the summer months. She uses Spot to keep her husband informed of her progress between destinations.

I've read conflicting reports on the technology/use - some reviews say the processor is outdated, other reviews say the yearly fee is too much for the services you get. I know my wife would like me to get a Spot, but I've been reluctant to this point - more for the money than the technology.

My folks used one for a 4 day sailing trip up the coast... was reassuring to see where they were and that they were still updating even without cell signal.

I've thought about one, but for the price of the unit and the yearly fee, it makes more sense to just call my cell provider and ask them to turn on one of the child monitoring features on my phone so that my wife can log in and check the location of my cell phone, which should find out where i am as well.

Granted, it doesn't work when I don't have signal, but most places I go has signal... and if she calls, the GPS pops up an alert that I've got a call, so I can pull over and either take it, or call her back.
