One word for ya....KNOX. I use the Knox "cross knee" knee guard (size S for short, knee only). Works so well I trash all the junk that comes in my riding pants and wear the Knox instead. The biggest benefit (besides how darn comfortable they are) is that they have superior coverage and stay ON THE KNEE. Knee armor built into pants is a joke as they are only on your knee when legs fully bent. Who do you know that hits the pavement in a fetal position?? As soon as you're "airborne" your pants slack, and that built in armor is useless. The Knox straps on, therefor it is ON YOUR KNEE, know matter what position your legs are in. This makes them more comfortable, superior for protection (they will be where you want them to be, when you knee them to be), and can be used under ANY riding (or not) pants. Not the cheapest though...about $75-100, but worth every penny.
