Securing A GPS

Just got a handlebar mount for my Nextar X3 GPS. The instructions have WARNINGS and DISCLAIMERS about securing the GPS to the handlebars and recommend using a "strap" to provide additional security to avoid the GPS unit from being detached from the mount.

There was a recent thread about someone losing their GPS after riding over railroad tracks, turning around and seeing it laying in the road but watching it get run over by a truck before he could pick it up.

If you have a GPS handlebar mount, what, if anything, do you use to provide additional security?

I have a Ram Mount for my Palm Treo Pro phone that also has GPS, it's a cradle with claws and the top clamp is spring loaded. To make it more secure I put a rubber band around the phone and cradle.

Jet: How do you power this unit? Do you have it wired to your battery? If so, how?

I have a garmin vista gps..it has a cord tie ..I mount the gps to my handle bar mount and listen to be sure it clicks..and then I wrap the cord arround my formotion clock so that if mount fails my gps will be hanging from the formotion mount..it has never failed in over 2 years!

I don't power it, I just carry an extra battery to insert when the 1st one runs out. Simpler than wiring a power port.

I don't think my Nextar has an "insertable" battery; only a rechargeable one so I need a powerport for long rides over 3 hours. I will try your rubberband idea to secure the unit.

On my other bike, 2005 Suzuki C50T, I made a power port that goes straight to the battery from the handlebar, I guess that's also an option on the Bonneville.

Might you have a pic of that setup? I guess you ran it under the tank and seat?
