Exclamation Fender Eliminator Issues...

Hey all. So, I'm a fairly new Triumph rider and got myself a shiny new Daytona 675 about 2 months ago. Well, I knew it would be inevitable that I'd get pulled over someday, but certainly not for what the cop ticketed me for. He cited me for "improperly displaying my license plate". I have a Competition Werkes fender eliminator kit on the bike which removes the stock rear fender and relocates the plate directly back about 12 inches and down about 3 inches. The plate is still 100% visible and has a very bright light illuminating it as well (got pulled over in broad daylight though). Anyway, my question is has anyone else had this same issue? I am thinking about contesting the ticket because the license plate is fully visible from all angles, is illuminated, and the tags are current. Anyone done this same thing and been successful? I spoke with a friend of mine who is a police officer in the same city and he was shocked to hear an officer even bothered pulling me over. Like I said, there was no other infraction at all, he simply pulled me over for the license plate. I was ticketed in Kansas City, Missouri just in case that helps. Any and all advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi welcome to the Forum. Funny you bring up this subject, I have never been personally pulled over for this. But, when I went to the AMA races @ Road Atlanta, some of the local riders on the infield were amazed how my plates were placed on my bike.

I have a Two Brothers exhaust and I am using the fender eliminating kit that came with it. The local riders said that my kit was illegal in Atlanta and that I would get pulled over, because they were pulled over with the same kits on their bikes. The plates are fully visible as well and has LED lights that illuminate it at night.

I don't understand maybe its some angry at the world police officers. I would definetely contest the ticket, you don't have anything to lose. And in the process maybe find out what the local laws are where you live. Keep us up to date on what you find out. OH by the way, how much was the ticket for?

Thanks for the welcome! Well, I did some more research last night and this morning and here's what I found out. I am actually licensed and tagged in the state of Kansas, but happened to be riding home on the Missouri side when I got pulled over. I spoke with a Missouri Vehicle Inspections officer who simpy said the tag must be "towards the rear of the vehicle, fully visible, and illuminated." However, since I am licensed in Kansas she recommended contacting Kansas state troopers to learn the legality in Kansas. The Kansas state trooper laughed when I told him what happened and referred me immediately to the Kansas legislature web page and gave me the statute number detailing this law. Statute 8-133 of Kansas law states "the license plate assigned to the vehicle shall be attached to the rear thereof and shall be displayed during the current registration year...and be clearly visible." Long story short, I'm in the clear. Just because I cross the state line into Missouri does not mean I have to stop at the state line and rearrange the tag to comply with Missouri law. It is the same situation as states that require license plates on the front and back of cars. A vehicle passing through a state requiring this but only has a tag on the rear of the car does not have to attach a second plate while in that state. If you are still curious about your own state's law go to their legislature's webpage and do some searching, or simply call your state trooper's office and they can help you. So, it looks like I'll be able to keep that $40 in my pocket instead of paying it out to "da Man!" Thanks for the reply, Orlando. Enjoy the rest of the riding season and be safe.
