675 Conversion, Japan to US

hey everyone, I live in japan and I really want to pick up a 675 while Im here.I definitely want to take it back to the states once i leave, so I was wondering if anyone knows the exact requirements for converting a 675 over to US specs, or where I could get that info? Ive heard all kinds of stories, but I need some solid info. Any help would be appreciated, thanks guys...

Go to the Triumph website and email customer service. Ask them if there are any differences between Japanese spec 675s and US spec 675s first. If there are no differences, then it would be a matter of contacting the BMV in the state where you plan to reside upon your return to the states.

It would probably be cheaper to buy a used one while you are in Japan, sell it before your departure and buy a new one when you return to the states.

Shipping it here would be a huge cost burden and it would take forever to get it here. Plus, unless you have the ability to coat the bike in cosmoline before you ship it, it will likely be covered with corrosion upon its arrival in the states.

So what was the result of your investigations..

Headlights are one thing if you're going from left to right side of the road (they dip different directions). So you might sell your existing headlights in Japan probably. Not much good in the USA.

If moving to california there's an emissions control unit or "evaporation control unit" I think it is that has to be installed. Basically it catches the fuel fumes and cycles them back to the tank. Ask on triumph675.net for one second hand: lots of them seem to take it off (believing it to be some sort of huge power increase/weight reduction.. haha).

If it is anything like shipping that I've looked at briefly: you'll have to own it for a year to avoid getting taxed excessively. Though Japan has some rules about not allowing for old cars on the road, so might pay to check up on that also..

The speedo can be converted too...
It will read in kilometres, and can be switched to miles using the three buttons. From memory, hold down the two outside ones for about 3 seconds. A number will start to flash (1,2 or 3). The other two will give you miles with either a 12 or 24 hour clock... (Its been a while if I'm NQR)
