Trading much loved Thruxton for 675 Daytona

After total brake failure (not sure of the exact cause yet - but it seems like asking too much of the pads) at the end of the start/finish straight on Sunday's track-day (+- 160kph) resulting in a very fast run off and my having to put the bike down in the kitty litter I finally realised that I was asking too much of my much loved Thruxton. I'm trading her for a 675 that I'll use for track-days and maybe race. No damage to me and only a few scratches to the Thrux and a bent gear selector...

Speaking to my dealer he said there is an SE 08 version due. He knows nothing of the particulars (well this is Africa!) In South Africa we get everything last so I wondered if anyone knew of this SE version and what if any differences there are to the regular 675?

Sorry to hear about your mishap with the Thruxton. They are great bikes but in stock trim can not really cope with the stress of race tracks. Many modifications are required. Believe me, my 904 Bonnie has had them all, EXCEPT THE BRAKES! I could've bought a 1098 for all I've done, but that wouldn't be a fast Bonnie then. All we have heard stateside is th SE is mostly a graphics change. There are rumors that the pistons have received the same treatment the Street Triple has for lowering oil consumption, but they are only rumors to date. Track day fanatics are of varying opinions that oil consumption is an issue, but it does seem to happen, I've yet to really thrash the bike, as winter is really upon us here. You will not regret the change. The 675 is far better suited for what you want. I just couldn't part with the Bonnie as a street bike. If there are no differences, see if you can snag an '07 for less money.

Oil consumption is hit or miss. Mine doesn't use oil. A friend who rides his on the track reports little or no oil use, but another friend who has only done a couple trackdays on his talks about high oil consumpition sometimes. All three are 2006 model bikes, and fairly early ones. The issue may be isolated to earlier bikes, but I don't know for sure.

No oil consumption to report with mine - I broke it in according to the manual and have over 8000 miles on it. About one third have come on the track.

You'll love the new bike.

I think oil consumption has more to do with how you break the bike in, and that is not exclusive to the 675. Take it easy while breaking in and you'll have a friend for life.

There was a poll some time ago regarding oil use and break in procedure on the 675 forum, and there was no correlation. I am not a big fan of moto-man for a number of reasons, but the hard breakin doesn't seem to increase oil use, at least in the short run.

Hoal's Hoek? Not a nice place to go off I wouldn't think. Glad that you weren't hurt. I'll ask my dealer on Saturday about the SE; maybe he'll know something. Good luck with the D675!

Dave.

As far as i know the only differences about the SE are colors of the paint and wheels.
