Hello,

I'm new here and really pretty new to riding as well, so please excuse my ignorance.

I purchased a Triumph Daytona 675 two days ago and I'm wondering how I should break-in the engine.

The dealer said to keep the rpm's under 7k and not to do long distances at the same rpm, but that doesn't really tell me much. For instance is it ok to go 65mph on the freeway for 20-30minutes at a time? Or is that too fast or too long? Should I just motor around town under 45mph?

I've already put nearly 150miles on it, part freeway and part around town, start stop, etc. The rpm has hit a little over 6k at times, but the 675 revs high at 65mph in 6th gear so I'm not sure if that's bad??? So many questions, im sorry.

Thanks for any help.

When I got my D650 there was a sticker on the tank that had max rpms until certain mileage. i.e max 4000rpm for first 300miles. Is there not one on your tank? Basically you build the max revs you use as the milage increases upto the first 1000miles and then do what you like but DONT keep the same rpm for long periods i.e. don't go for 2hrs at 4000rpm , vary it a lot.

Thanks, i haven't had a chance to look at the tank. I'll look this morning. I'm just terrified I may have started breaking it in wrong with 6k rpms. :-/

Your fine,

If you do your own svc/maintenance, drop the oil around 300 miles run it for another 300 using the break in oil and change it again to synthetic.

There are many different theories to breaking in a motor.

The main things to stay away from are the constant speed for extended periods and over rev before 600 miles.

The best thing to do is bring it up to your 6k rpms and then let the engine do most of the braking and down shift threw the gears. Repeat and then let the motor cool and run it again.

Thanks brettmess24.

You don't know how much I appreciate your post, I can finally get some rest tonight, I'd been stressing out about this and not sleeping well.

I'll focus more on decelaration with the engine and trying to vary the speeds a lot. I'll also make sure to keep it under 6k from now on.

Other Motorcycle: anything I can get.
I always follow the tank sticker I max out at what it says in your case 7k but you can do that up through the gears as said before dont cruse along the freeway at 7k for two hours vary the revs, being new to riding and asking questions is cool we all started sometime. I would in your position leave the oil changing to the dealer you will have been told how many miles to the first service, book it early as trying to get work done at short notice is never easy, and its harder not being able to ride cos the bike needs its service but you cannot get into the shop for a week. You will not do any damage as long as you stick to the spirit of what the guy said but its not too critical if you go over the revs by mistake every now and then, some say use all the revs but dont let the bike labor in low gears and dont run extended periods at one rev say 7k. you will get somany different answers to this if you go back through the pages on this forum. Keep asking questions no one with any sence will flame you for being new. :-D

Just chill out and take it easy - everyone's chipped on with some good advice.

Don't look on running it in as a chore but think of it as an opportunity for you to get to know the bike a bit before you get to use the power for real 'cos above 7K it will go like sh1t off of shovel

Hey,

Thanks guys.

Well I found the gas tank sticker (under the saddle bag) and it said to keep it under5k rpms for the first 300miles. I've had it all the way up to 6k rpms for probably 20 minutes at a time, so am I hosed? I sure hope not.

From here on out I'll make sure follow the instructions on the tank (i wish id known it was there).

Again your fine,

Slowly take it up by about 1k rpm's every 100 miles or so.

After the 600 miles ride it like it was meant to be.

rtoo, they are saying that the ones broken in " by the book " are using oil and the ones that the riders did not follow Triumphs guidelines are not using oil??

My 675 was broken in " by the book " give or take a few .... I keep a close eye on the oil, I have had to add about a quart so far...( this was at about 2000 miles...she has 3000 on her now.

I did not change out the oil at 300 miles, I waited for the 500 mile service like Triumph said...

But to each their own....
