Conclusion
Picking a winner in this category is nearly always the toughest job of the year. The fact that things have moved on at such a pace, yet no-one's been caught napping, makes the choice for 2006 harder still.
Though it pains me to say it, the Ducati 749 has to come last. It's just that little bit too expensive and while it may compete in the same class of racing, it's difficult to compare it to any of the sixes. While it's a riding experience all of its own, it lacks enough day-to-day practicality to make it a contender.
Next its the Yamaha R6. On the track this bike would more than likely be bancing fairings for top spot, but this isn't a track test, and the Yamaha is just too focused to make it feel like anything other than hard work in this company.
Honda's 600RR comes home in 4th place, just a whisker away from the podium. The chassis is great and it's an easy bike to ride, it's just not quite as exciting or involving as the top 3. On the bottom step then, its Kawasaki's ZX-6R. The decent midrange offered by the extra cubes makes it easy going on the road and despite the £7299 price tag, identical '05 models can be had from DK for £5799 so it's also a bit of a bargain.
RUnner up spot goes to the Suzuki. The new Gxxr is a cracking bike that works very well on the road and inspires confidence. It's got one of the best sound tracks, looks the part and is only just beaten to the top spot by the AWESOME DAYTONA 675.
This is the bike Triumph must have been building up to, because it's so much better than anything else they've ever produced. Everything about it pleasing to the rider, be it the performance or quite simply the fact that it looks beautiful from every angle whetehr static or in motion.
There's a new supermodel strutting it's stuff in the showrooms these days; a bold but classy British beauty that quite literally speaks our language..... :-D
