Fellow Daytona 675 rider needs everyone's help

So here is the scenario...

I have an '08 Daytona, the has either a problem with the shifter fork or an engagement dog on second gear. I have taken the bike to the shop, and Triumph now wants the shop to do a "tear down", (12 hrs of labor @ $90 an hr) plus possibly some addition gaskets here and there due to the pull apart.

Triumph wants this action done in order to designate if the issue was caused by misuse or if it is an actual design flaw.

This whole issue is due to my warrenty ending on 02.05.10, which is why Triumph is putting up a fight.

I have not taken to bike to the track. I do not pull squiddy wheelies in parking lots or anywhere to that matter, to impress onlookers.

So here is my need...

If anyone, has had a similar issue, in any of the same trannies as the '08, PLEASE by all means let me know. The more people that have had this same issue, the more my case has a leg to stand on when dealing with Triumph.

Thank you all.

It wouldn't have to be a design flaw to be warrantable. All it has to be is a problem with your specific bike. If you have not abused your bike, then it should be covered.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.

I found my 08 Tona difficult to get into 2nd the first few times I rode it - it needs a much more positive shove than my last bike, a K1 Suzi GSXR750. Pretty sure I've gotten used to it now and it hasn't been much of a problem, and Suzis are known for having the smoothest sweetest gearboxes in the business.

How long have you had the bike? Has it been a problem for you since day 1? Don't mean to question you, but you need to make sure it's actually a problem with something in the shifting arrangement, not the way you're riding it. Did the shop mechanic ride it and agree with you?

I would certainly arc up at the suggestion that you should pay for a tear down at >$1000 just for them to determine who should pay for the repairs. If it is a definite problem that needs fixing, and there's no other excessive wear and tear that could be interpreted as abuse/misuse I think you're within your rights to insist that they do it under warranty.

Maybe call whatever your local consumer protection/small claims organisation is (no idea where you are, so can't be more specific!) and ask them for advice.

Best of luck with it anyway!

Sorry I was not more specific in explaining what is going on...

Whenever second gear has load on it, the gear will feel as if it disengages briefly. Briefly being around a half second, like a studder step. Now, the transsmission can be set into second with no worries at all. Throttle application is the the key to re-establishing and reproducing the issue. Light roll ons = no problems, three quarter to full throttle jaunts = bad karma ju-ju.

Both the mechanic and owner of my local Triumph dealership have agreed to either a shifter fork or engagement dog on the gear itself.

Do not get me wrong, Triumph is "going above and beyond" in hearing me out, by seeing where the issue is and not just slamming the door in my face.

Oh, and I am in California. Not sure if we have the same type of Consumer Protection, that you have over there? Of course, that would be the worst case scenario, and I am praying that we do not have to get that far gone with this.

I give my solemn word that I have never hit nor called my bike names that would cause permanent or lasting physical or mental damage...

If I remember right the mechanic said something along the same lines as you. Something like as long as it was not "rider caused", so I am hoping I do not fall into that category.

Smile Good luck

"Rider caused" would mean something like that you put the front wheel against a brick wall, revv to 12 000 and stomp the gearshifter?

All I do is "take to bike to the track. Pull squiddy wheelies in parking lots and anywhere to that matter, to impress onlookers." - Isn't that why we are D675 owners?
I had to do a teardown on an older 955i Tiger due to starter clutch failure which was a known design problem then. The shop made discounts to my satisfaction. To my knowledge Triumph engines are sturdy and oversized in bearings etc. But in your case let's hope for a material-failure or such that falls under the warranty.

Hope you get it sorted soon!

One of the reasons I like Triumph is how they stand behind their product. A lot depends on the dealer to advocate your position.Warranty trans work can be a sticky area if the dealer is not very good service wise. They just may not want to do it. I haven't heard of that from Triumph dealers to date. How many miles on the bike? Is it still under warranty? You shouldn't have a problem. You'll have to stick with the dealer you bought it from.

That is the argument here. Warrenty ended on 02.05.10. I would have taking it to the dealership that I purchased the bike from but I recently moved four hours north of there. Currently there are 12k+ miles on the bike.
