Engine Malfunction Light Stays On

Hi Folks,

Well, it finally happened. After about two months of waiting to the funds together I finally bought my Daytona 675. It's a 2007, with only 1039 miles on the clock. Unfortunately, on the way home from picking it up, the engine light came on after may an hour of riding or so - nothing crazy in terms of my riding style, especially because it was raining pretty heavily and mostly motorway riding. Nothing specific happened at the time it came on. I think I was accelerating through about the 8000rpm range, but nothing remarkable. Continued on for another 50 miles or so to get the bike to my parent's house that I was planning to stop off at before continuing on for another 100 miles or so home.

After checking the manual, I decided best to leave it there and contact the dealership I bought it from (on Monday, as they're closed over the weekend).

I then took a train home, leaving the bike with my parents and I've now done a little searching online, and my suspicion is it's battery related and there's a chance if I cycle the engine up to temperature and back down again three times the light might go off, but even so it seems I wouldn't know exactly what it is. I'm tempted to get a train back up there tomorrow (Sunday) and try it, but I think the reality is it needs checking anyway so I'm better to just wait to arrange that with the dealer.

Just posting here in case anyone has any wisdom to offer one way or the other. And also to say that the bike is awesome - can't wait to get to know it properly once this is taken care of

Cheers, Tom

Probably the exhaust valve. The bike hasn't been ridden a whole lot if it has so few miles on it, and my guess right off is the exhaust valve or mechanism has corroded and is stuck, causing the light.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.

I agree with Will. The most likely culprit is the ExUpBV...

It was the exhaust valve, although interestingly it seemed to right itself by the time I got back on the bike a week later to take it to the shop for repair. Took it in anyway to be sure, but that's what they told me. Gave me a free engine mapping into the bargain, so no complaints from here, but all seems to be fine now

It was probably just gummed up and stuck from sitting. The heat you ran through it just running the bike probably caused parts to expand and contract enough to loosen it back up again. It's just a guess, though.

I'm glad it all worked out. It's good news all around.

I had a similar story, with the exception that i was riding my bike daily to commute. The exup was throwing codes (though it still seemed to be working based on exhaust note). I'm currently working on cutting it out of a spare header i bought off ebay (then using tuneboy to update my map/remove the exup from the map).

Thumbs up OBDII Scanner

Also wanted to mention/remind that the Daytona is a standard OBDII interface, so any OBDII scanner can read the codes... the catch is that you will need a service manual to decipher them (but i think the service manual is good to have anyway).
