Old chains end up with tight spots, this would explain the tightening as you turn the wheel, remember the chain should be adjusted to have up and down play WHEN YOU ARE SITTING ON THE BIKE, if you adjust it to give play without you on it, when you do sit on the bike the chain will be like a bowstring, then hit a bump and it will get even tighter, this can really damage the front sprocket bearing, I would clean and lube the chain if its not over streached (how much adjustment have you got left), re set at the correct tension, I give it about an inch of play when you are on the bike, and see how the wheel spins, if it is ok then fine, if not new chain and if required sprockets and if the noise is still there, fit a new sprocket bearing, there is a thread on how to do this on here somewhere, the auther did say it was a simple job, hope this helps and also hope I have not told gran how to suck eggs, DD.
