Speedo off and on - engine light on the off

I just wanted to pass on some information to anyone who runs into the same couple of problems I recently had.
I bought a CE Daytona in March with less than 850 miles o it. No kidding a 5 year old bike with under 850 miles. Basically brand new. How disappointed was I when the speedo worked sometimes and didn't sometimes after 5 months of owning it. To get it to work, I had to kill the engine and restart. Take off and see if it was giving a display other than 0. If not repeat step 1 till it did. When it worked it worked fine but when it didn't, I was putting the starter to work to get her there. No huge deal, but I like to know mileage for oil changes.
I could live with though, but when the check engine light came on with just under 3 grand on the clock my heart sank. I read the threads and found out that a regular car OBD II reader would tell me what was wrong. Other threads said that the speedo problem was common and the dealer could update the ECU/ECM to rectify. I called 2 dealers in North Carolina and neither heard of the fix (I talked to the techs) both would be happy to hook me up for a diagnostic for $45 in Greensboro or $85 in Charlotte. I called around pricing an OBD II reader to see if I could read myself for what they would charge when Advance Auto said bring it on by and we will hook you up for free.
Cool. I trailered concerned I would do damage running the tona.
2 codes read. 1502 and 0135. The first a speedo malfunction and the second a oxygen sensor malfunction. I wrote the codes down, ask the fine lad to clear the codes and thanked him for the 5 minutes of his time that Triumph was going to charge a night on the town for. While I had the seat off, I wiggled the battery cables and they needed a snugging.
The check engine light never came back after wiping the sensor down (I washed the bike earlier that day) and the speedo is fine. Seemed loose cables will cause the speedo problem. Hope someone finds some of this information useful.

Thanks for the info, the speedo thing is really frustrating sometimes. I thought I fixed it once when I installed a new battery. But 2 weeks later the speedo was dying again, then read about the computer update.
Hopefully your speedo problem never comes back.

Here is a solution to a problem I had earlier this year: The bike would turn over normally, but wouldn't fire. It had spark, but then I noticed the fuel pump wuldn't prime, so I thought it was dead. But I killed the 6 year old battery turning it over and over after replacing relays and fuses. So I figured it was time to get a new battery anyway, and when I put it in, the bike fired up right away. It turns out that if the battery is old and weak, the computer will start shutting things down, starting with the fuel pump apparently. I was sure happy it was just the battery.

Now I just need to get to a dealer and update that darn ecu.
