Intro & question

I am new to the group, just picked up a 2002 Daytona 955 CE . I found out on my first ride that the speedometer does not work, are there any common problems or can anyone point me in a direction to look. thanks Rex

Welcome to the forum, I just joined last March and have found tons of wonderful info on the '02 955i. Even reading about other sizes and years have taught me a lot about which tires are best, where to find parts. If you've got a couple hours some day in the near future, you should grab a cup of coffee and start reading, and reading and reading. That helped me a lot.

But to get you started I'll tell you that the speedo problem is very common, you need to take it to a Triumph dealer and get them to update the computer. Another big thing is to get a new battery if it's more than a few years old, these machines are power hungry.

Also, we all love to hear about the time everyone forgets to put up the kickstand and wonders why their bike just won't start. Believe me, if it hasn't happened yet, it will. LOL.

Not alone

I just joined myself and also have an 02 CE daytona. My speedo works sometimes and sometimes it desen't. I live in Charlotte, NC and the techs at the local dealer and the dealer 90 miles away in Greensboro(called them both after reading the threads here) both said they don't know about the ECU fix but would hook me up to the reader unit to find out. Pissed me off though. Local dealer wants an hour labor $85 and the one 90 miles away wants half an hour. Funny thing is if the check engine light wasn't on, would be a great ride to Greensboro. Mine sat a long time before i bought it and has less than 3000 miles on the odometer.
Tomorrow I am going to a local Advance auto that will hook me up to a OBD II for free. I'll let you know how it codes. I don't want to go to a tech who knows less than the folks here if they charge by the hour.

Re:intro

If a standard automotive OBD II code reader will work I have one of those. I also called local dealer & they did not seem to know anything about a computer update but offered to hook it up & read codes. does anyone know where the OBD II plug in is located. I also want to say thanks for the info about it not starting with the side stand down, thats already happened to me :-)

I believe the update is just a new software update, and the dealers might not know exactly what's in it. But it is supposed to eliminate the 'speedo diagnostic check' when you first turn the key on.

You will read nothing on recorded failure codes for a speedo error problem, whether by the Triumph Dealer Gameboy or by an OBD reader:
- the issue with the '02-ish ECM program map is that is has a pursposeful 'feature' that will disable the speedo if it see a slightly low battery voltage.

However, this was an extremely problematic firmware 'feature' where it would often go into that mode, even with adequate battery condition.
The solution is to load a later rev of tune which disables the speedo error check function. None of the later version tunes enabled this feature due its clear shortcomings.

Any dealer who attempts to charge you diagnostics for this is a complete rogue - at best, incompetent in accessing the knowledge base & being aware of this very commonly known issue.
Almost as bad, if they charge you to install an updated tune to remedy a known problem with the original factory installed tune.

Now there are potentially issues with the sender itself - the magnet in the speedo sender can break (if the failure occurs after a wheel removal for tire replacement etc I would point to that), as can the cable have broken wires - however if it comes & goes it most likely just needs an updated tune loaded to the ECM.

Speedo code

The OBD II plug is right behind the battery face down on a holder clip. Just pull it out and plug it in. Advance Auto read it for free. The speedo code that read was p1502. I googled it and found it was related to the speedo. The Ford code seemed the closest "Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Intermittant (Ford)." The updated tune seems to make sense but I corrected mine by tightening the terminals on the battery. I also has a P0135 which turned out to be a 0s sensor. Hope this helps.
