98 955i help needed

Ok I'm a newb to Triumphs, though I've always loved them. I just baught a 1998 955i and I noticed that only the right and top headlamps light up when in low beam mode. Is this normal or should all three lamps come on? I have not tried in high beam because the battery needs charged and haven't gotten a tender yet. Is this just because there is low battery power to the bike? That seems unlikely to me, but what do I know. Also when I turn the key and flip the engine on button, but before the bike is actually running, the oil light and engine light come on. Is that normal? I think a honda that I used to have did that as well, but can't remember for sure. Thanks in advance for the input. I'm sure I'll have many more questions to come. Great forum!

EU legislation

you are a victim of a stupid EU ruling that motorcycles with two separate units should only have one on at a time... take a look at some of the jap bikes that fit this ruling and they have the same lopsided look!!

Should be easy to fix. On the ST there is an empty Relay slot that can be filled to get both on. It ought to be the same on the Daytona!

That should already be taken care of on US bike Rexx - there is indeed a separate relay for the left headlight; so either the bulb is burned or the relay might be bad (or missing) - check below your seat first off to see if it's there!

There is not significant current difference whether on low or main beam for the amount of time it will take to flip the main/low switch for a few secs to check the high beams, CmacTrat.
If the high beams work OK, try swapping relay 2 & relay 3 - if the result is the same, you have a bad bulb; if they swap (high beam out, low beam good) then you have a bad relay

Thanks for all the good info guys! I think the problem is more simple then I thought. The battery on the bike is low and when I turn the ignition on all of the lights come on even in low beem. The light only goes off after I try to crank the bike and the battery doesn't have enough juice to turn over the engine. It will sit on a battery tender tomorrow and I'll probably just replace the battery. But all three worked when the engine was running at the time I bought it, so hopefully that's that. It is kind of weird, both RexxyPup and DEcosse gave the right answer because the bike was purchased and used in England by a U.S. soldier stationed there, but was shipped to America (privately by the original owner) and the lights were changed to meet U.S. safety standards. Thanks again for all the good info. This is a great forum!

Actually all the headlights should go out when its cranking (starter button is depressed), even under normal operation. This is to give maximum voltage to the starter & coils for starting.

Out of curiousity - does it have a manual light switch (off/side/head) on the left bar switchgear assembly? That switch was not on the US bikes and has a little rubber tab where it would go (the US lights are on all the time with ignition other than the exception stated above) I actually fitted a UK switch to mine!

Nope, no switch. I looked through the paperwork and I talked to the dealership that did the change over and they switched the whole assembly.
