Odd sound when in Neutral

I have a 2002 Daytona, 11,500 miles on the clock (roughly). Bought used in May with 4829 miles. Changed the oil and filter last around 10,000 miles, changed the rear tire at 5500 miles, and the front tire at around 10,800 miles. I am also running a custom Tuneboy tune, but I haven't been able to make changes (for the better) as of late because my laptop has been broken.

Aside from those things, not too much in the way of changes.

Just recently, I started getting what sounds almost like a mechanical knocking or loose something or other in the engine. I can only hear it when the bike is running and I put it into neutral. It doesn't sound like it goes away when I get on the throttle though. When I have the clutch pulled in any given gear I have no problem, and the bike isn't running abnormally, but when I let the clutch in in neutral I get that sound.

Any ideas? I was thinking the cam chain, but I don't know for sure on that and I wanted some ideas before I tore the bike apart. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the clutch. Get it looked at asap before any damage occurs. I think that would be worst case scenario. Hopefully, it's something simple like being a little low on oil (no offense, but some people overlook things like that) I'm guilty of not checking the oil as often as I should.

But you might be on the right track with the cam chain too. Maybe the chain tensioner is getting worn.

Strange noise

It sounds to me like the input shaft bearing is on it's way out. Get this to the shop soon. if ignored, a bearing will seize and destroy the shaft on which it is mounted. Good luck.

In neutral with the clutch out, they all rumble as if they're about to fall apart.

If this has become worse, it's likely that your clutch is getting a little old and as you bought it used, there's no way of knowing how it was treated before you got it.

The cam chain is always under tension whether the bike is in neutral or not, clutch in or out. Not likely to be the cam chain IMO.

If you're running a magnetic sump plug, what does that look like when you're changing the oil? Metallic fragments?

With my '02 in neutral with the clutch out, I would have to get on my hands and knees, and put my ear to the clutch cover to hear it. I've got nearly 12K miles on it.

Both my brand new, ridden off the showroom floor '05 and '06 Daytonas have rumbled with the clutch out and quietened audibly when the clutch was pulled in.

It's not a disturbing noise, you just know that the clutch is disengaged by the sound.

A deadly rattle or knocking is NOT normal and should be looked at.

These Triumph motors (at least the 955i's) are a grumbly beast.
