New member, big problem,

Hi from the UK, new to this site, I am a Rocket 3 owner and today I picked up a second Triumph but got off to a bad start, it is a 995i Daytona 98 that has been converted to a Speed Triple, had a 140 mile ride home after buying the bike, it had a bit of cam chain rattle at 5k rpm which I wasnt too worried about but I was almost home when it started making louder noises, I pulled over and got it recovered home, it was still running but very noisy, any idea what I am going to find and is it terminal? I assume the first step is cam cover off and maybe clutch cover, thanks for any help.

Hopefully it's just the chain tensioner. Go ahead and start pulling the cover off, that's the only way to know for sure. And, welcome to the forum. We are all here to help each other, so if you find the problem and the fix, please let us know.

If the chain is tight, and everything looks ok, maybe it's the clutch. There are some clutch related stories on this forum worth reading.

Took the clutch side cover off and it looks like at least one big end has gone, I can see the right hand con rod through the cases and it has a lot of play in it, so I have to decide if to find another engine or sell it on and let somebody else fix it!

your best bet is to source a new motor, i would think you could get one for around the same price you could fix it for.

Unfortunately, replacing the motor probably is much cheaper at least it is over here in the states. For you over in the UK..........

Sandy should have everything you need including a replacement motor I imagine. I only wish they had a place like this over here in the states. I have ordered from them before and they are very good and fast to get things out to you.

Good Luck,

TT

Thanks for that, I have used them before and plan to call tommorrow, I think the best way forward is a used motor, this bike needed a bit of finishing off but I didnt see this coming.

You're also lucky because I think they take your motor as a core which will take your cost down. I also think they warranty their motors. Either way you have good options. Too bad you didn't know before dropping the money on it.

Hi,

Sandy put the Daytona motor in my ST.

Not only do they take the old engine to keep costs down, and have a warranty (can't remember if it was 1 month or 3) but they will also pick your bike up, replace the engine and return the bike!!! For UK of course!

Called Triumph-ant this morning and they can supply a recon motor for £800 + vat, and 6-8 weeks until they have one done, not sure the bike is worth spending that much on, got the motor out today and cases split and it is only the right side big end gone, crank knackered, I have found a good used crank but whats the story with the shells, seems there are three different sizes.

Rexx, theres a tidy looking 99 ST motor on ebay, if you put the Daytona engine in your ST then it would work the other way, right?

ST Motor

Not sure.

I don't know when the ST engine was based upon the Daytona carcass.

Mine was an 04 ST to an 05 Daytona engine.

Calling DEcosse... Calling DEcosse

Okay, I've just put a call out for the expert on engine transplants
