Question Smoking Engine?

So I recently posted about some jerk knocking my bike over. It was running fine at first, but my engine is smoking, and today my engine wouldn't stay on if I didn't keep it revving over 2,000. It wouldn't idle. Any ideas?

It could be lots of things, really. When a bike tips over, the overflow lines start to dump out fuel. It can do funny things to the fuel system.

It could be something completely unrelated, as well.

Without looking at the bike, I couldn't be sure.

What type of Daytona is it? Fuel injected or carburaeted (sorry, I missed your previous thread)

It is a 99 Daytona 955i. So it is fuel injected. Thanks for interest.

A few questions:

What altitude do you live at? (they can get finnicky at higher elevations)

What was the outside air temperature when it was running funny? Higher temperatures can cause mine to run funny...

Mine seems to run better on colder days...

I live in Austin, so the altitude isn't high. The temperature is pretty warm 80's and 90's.

Mine runs funny at higher altitude and higher temps. It will even stall on occasion...

Since you're in Austin, you'll be getting some cooler weather soon. See if it doesn't correct itself when it gets a little cooler...

it sounds to me that you had oil in the airbox and now its going into the cylinder. it probally has fouled the plugs and the O2 sensor is probally coated with burnt oil from the cylinder.

did you open and clean the airbox after the tip-over?
it has a tendency to collect oil when they tip onto teir left side.

JamesStev, If your m/c fell over on the left hand side you almost assuredly have some oil in the airbox. Since it wasn't hydrolocked, at this point I'd pull the airbox and clean the inside, change the plugs and pull the crankcase breather hose and make sure there isn't any oil in it. It is possible that the crankcase breather seal ruptured and you're pulling oil from the crankcase when running, but this can only be verified after the other work.

yep, that's gotta be it

I'll bet that if you get some of that spray solvent specially made for O2 sensors, you'll probably start getting better gas mileage out of her as a result. Gee, an up side to a tip over, there can be a bright side to these things. Also, if you replace the plugs and your bike calls for 8's then you should probably run 9's (at least in the Summer months). The change in heat range will help on those balmy-hot days. I hope this helps.
